From Minnesota Roots to Arizona's Pest Control Leader: The Cummings Termite & Pest Journey

In a journey spanning from the landscapes of Duluth, MN, to the thriving pest control industry in Arizona, the founder of Cummings Termite & Pest shares his unique story.  After pursuing a diverse range of interests in college, including theater and classical music, the entrepreneur found his calling in the unexpected realm of pest control. Cummings Termite & Pest, has evolved into a reputable and customer-centric business. As the leader of a prominent pest management company, valuable advice on sanitation and proactive measures for residents is shared, emphasizing the commitment to customer satisfaction and industry leadership.

Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in the area? Tell us about your family
I was born in Duluth, MN where we still have acreage to this day. We like to spend part of the summer there planting trees, riding trails, and fishing. The early half of my childhood was spent in Rochester, MN, however. In 1990, the family moved to Waterloo, IA for the back half.

Tell us about the events that led up to where you are now.
Following high school, I made my way back to Minnesota where I attended Gustavus Adolphus College. I anticipated getting involved in the theater due to my love of Shakespeare and continuing with my classical music training in the college orchestra, but admittedly the school rugby club was a bit more tempting....so I forfeited the more civilized arts for an eclectic group of guys that preferred discomfort and a good party over the already rigid course buildouts of our respective majors. Upon graduation, I moved to Minneapolis and worked for two years before packing a suitcase and landing in Arizona.

What is your business, how/why did you start your business?
My business is pest control, the company is Cummings Termite & Pest. I didn't start out carving this path, I was heading in one direction when this opportunity happened while working in Minnesota. I was 24 years old and decided I had the energy and was obstinate enough to purchase a company of my own. The Cummings name is the name of the previous family, established in 1972. It was sold to my family in 2005. Since then, we have continued to improve, modernize, grow, and enjoy our work. My wife joined me in 2022 and has aided in making sure the mechanics behind the service are well-oiled and more reflective of the benefits of a larger organization while maintaining everything good about a smaller business.

Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice can you offer to the residents?
Sanitation is paramount to the success of almost every pest management issue. It is also an area where our customers can directly participate. Sanitation includes everything from disinfecting kitchen surfaces to decluttering. Removal of harborage and consumable resources will have a substantial impact on pest pressure. If you want to reduce filth flies and crickets, pick up dog droppings immediately and if you have carpet/rugs in your home, schedule a carpet cleaning every 6 months to extract dead skin cells, hair, and accumulated dirt.

What else we should know about you, your family, or your business?
We want our customers to know we do not take their patronage for granted. There are nearly 2000 registered pest management companies in the state constantly jockeying for position and if we wish to continue to grow, be reputable, and remain an industry leader we need to stay ahead of that market.
