When Mac and Debbie Wear began planning a graduation gift for their oldest grandson, Evan, they wanted to give him something the entire family would remember forever. So, eight family members, including their two daughters, two sons-in-law, and two teenage grandsons, packed their bags and headed to Costa Rica for an unforgettable adventure.

Their journey began in the country's lush rainforest near La Fortuna, where each day brought something new to discover. The family hiked through rainforest parks, spotting wildlife in its natural habitat, including three species of monkeys, a slow-moving sloth, colorful toucans, a tapir, bright red poisonous frogs, a yellow viper, and even long lines of leaf-cutter ants carrying tiny pieces of leaves above their heads.

"We were all so interested in watching these ants," Debbie says. "They were amazing!"

The family also explored the area surrounding the majestic Arenal Volcano, took on Class III-IV whitewater rapids, soared through the rainforest on zip lines, toured coffee and chocolate farms, and relaxed in the natural hot springs at Baldi Resort. The adventurous activities were especially popular with the teenage boys, who couldn't get enough of the zip lining, rafting, and water slides.

After several days in the mountains, the family crossed the country to Costa Rica's Pacific coast, settling into an all-inclusive resort at Playa Flamingo. There, the pace slowed as they enjoyed the resort pool, visited the breathtaking Playa Conchal, known for its crushed white shell beach and crystal-clear turquoise water, and spent one unforgettable evening aboard a sunset catamaran. The excursion included snorkeling in a secluded cove, a traditional Costa Rican dinner, and a spectacular Pacific sunset.

For Debbie, one of the highlights of the trip was experiencing the rainforest itself.

"Seeing so much wildlife in its natural habitat, some of which we'd never seen before, was amazing," she says. "The local people were all very nice and polite, especially our helpful drivers."

Her biggest recommendation for anyone planning a similar trip? Hire a driver.

"The mountain roads are very winding and narrow, and they're especially difficult to navigate after dark."

From volcanoes and rainforests to beaches and breathtaking sunsets, Costa Rica offered the perfect setting for celebrating a milestone together. More than anything, it was a trip that created lasting memories across three generations, making Evan's graduation gift one the whole family will cherish for years to come.
