Stevie Powell

Bass Champs 2023 Texas Shootout

Our Young Achiever this month is 12-year-old Stevie Powell. Stevie is a 7th-grade Owasso student who plays club soccer for NEOFC as a right defender. She also enjoys playing guitar, but one of her favorite things to do is fish, which her papa taught her when she was little. Stevie tries to go several times a week and has caught bass, perch, crappie and catfish, but her favorite is bass fishing. Recently, Stevie competed in her first big bass tournament. We asked her to share more about herself and her amazing experience.

Tell us something you have achieved or some highlights of your experience in your bass fishing tournament:

This year I got to go to my first big bass tournament on Lake Fork in Texas with my papa. It was called the Bass Champs 2023 Texas Shootout. We had to be on the lake at 6:15 a.m. and our last cast was at 3:00 p.m. We came in 65th out of 328 and even though it was really hot and lasted all day, we had a good time and I learned a lot. I'm learning about different lures and how certain kinds are better for certain types of lakes and fish. I really enjoy being outside and in nature but fishing is definitely my favorite.

Is there something that makes you unique in this activity (a specific strength or quality you bring)?
I'm very patient and I absolutely love to learn new things and work hard to perfect the things I already know. I read and study all the time and like to spend as much time practicing fishing as I can. We go to the Stone Canyon Lake almost every night.

What other activities are you involved in/other things you like to do:
I like hanging out with friends and going to the pool. I also love animals so I started my own pet-sitting business, "Ruff Neighborhood". I watch people's pets, feed and let them out if they're out of town as well as take them for walks and stuff like that.

How do you keep a balance between sports, school, and other activities in your life?
It just works out. I'm always busy but it's not always on one thing. Having several activities mixed in with friends and school is fun and never boring.

What are your plans after high school?
Go to college somewhere that's good for medicine because I want to be an anesthesiologist when I grow up. It takes a lot of school but I really like school and think that sounds cool.

Name someone you admire. What makes them special and how have they motivated you?
My mom. She's always helping me with whatever I'm wanting to do. She believes in me, never gives up and never lets me give up. I also learned a lot about business from her having a store for 12 years. I always want to make her proud.

"Stevie is such a hard worker with some pretty neat activities that pique her interest. We look forward to seeing what more she accomplishes in the future."
