Ask Dr. Andy DeStefano why he became a veterinarian, and the answer goes back further than most people expect. “ I was one of those kids,” he says. “When I was about six years old, I wanted to be a vet.” At the time, he also dreamed of being a shortstop for the Yankees, but as the years went on, one path stuck. Science, problem-solving, and a genuine love for animals came together in veterinary medicine.

Today, as the new medical director at Central Animal Hospital since September 2025, Dr. DeStefano is doing exactly what he set out to do. After earning his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida in 2017, Dr. DeStefano built his career around thoughtful, science-based care. His interests range from nutrition and dermatology to internal medicine and surgery, but what truly drives him is something simpler.

“I’m not just treating animals,” he explains. “I want people to leave here feeling comfortable, informed, and better equipped to care for their pets.” That mindset is what he brings into Central Animal Hospital, a long-standing practice in the St. Petersburg community since the ‘70s that immediately felt like the right fit.

“It’s been here forever,” he says. “That was important to me. I wanted to be part of something established, something that people trust.”

When the opportunity came up after his previous hospital unexpectedly closed, Dr. DeStefano saw it as a chance to step into a leadership role and help guide a practice that already had strong roots. “I’ve always seen myself as a leader wherever I’ve worked,” he says. “This felt like the right next step.”

What stood out to him was the people. “The staff here is incredibly dedicated,” he says. “Everyone is focused on doing things the right way and staying current with best practices.”

Expect to see that commitment when you walk through the door. At Central Animal Hospital, the dedicated staff here takes a personal touch with four-legged friends and their pet parents. Appointments are thoughtfully spaced out to allow for one-on-one attention. Clients aren’t rushed. Pets aren’t crowded into stressful waiting situations with other animals. Instead, each visit is handled with care and patience for both the animal and the owner.

As a general practice, Central Animal Hospital offers comprehensive care from routine wellness visits to advanced diagnostics and surgery. They treat both cats and dogs, focusing on the full picture of an animal’s health from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail.

Dental care is another key focus, with procedures that closely mirror what you’d expect at your own dentist, including X-rays and thorough cleanings. They’re also expanding their capabilities with upgraded cryosurgery technology, allowing for non-invasive treatment of certain tumors and masses.

And for pets who need additional support, the hospital offers canine rehabilitation services, particularly beneficial for older animals or those recovering from surgery. “It’s not something every pet needs,” Dr. DeStefano says, “but there are many animals who can benefit from it.” Canine rehabilitation can make a world of difference for some furry friends.

“We want to be a place where people can come for everything,” he says. “A true one-stop shop.”

At the same time, the team understands when a referral is the best option. With several emergency and specialty clinics nearby, they work closely with trusted partners to ensure every pet gets the care it needs.

Dr. DeStefano has some words of wisdom for pet parents. He comments, “While it is tempting to reach for the Internet or AI sources for information about your pet’s health, especially nutritional health, the best resource is your medical team.” The Internet, as opposed to a veterinarian, can’t see your animal. “If you have questions, reach out to the veterinarian or the medical staff who work with them.” There is no substitute for an in-person veterinarian. 

When not working, Dr. DeStefano has a fulfilling life. He and his longtime partner are raising a blended family with four kids, which keeps them busy in the best way. When they can, they head to the beach to relax, visit the St. Pete Pier, or spend time exploring the local coastline from Madeira Beach to Fort De Soto.

“We’re big beach people,” he says.  He’s also a self-proclaimed “nerd,” with a love for sci-fi movies and card games, something he’s more than happy to pass along to the kids. And then there’s the bees.

“I got into beekeeping a few years ago,” he says. “It’s fascinating.” Though he’s taken a break recently, it’s still something he’s passionate about and hopes to become a beekeeper again very soon. 

At the end of the day, it’s simple. Dr. DeStefano cares about doing things the right way: taking the time, paying attention, and treating each pet with compassion and concern.
