Where Sweet Meets Nostalgia: Inside For the Love of Flour

Tucked into the heart of the community, For the Love of Flour is the kind of bakery that instantly feels familiar—like stepping into a memory you didn’t realize you missed. Owner Jennifer McGarry has created more than just a place to pick up dessert; she’s built a space rooted in comfort, connection, and homemade goodness.

“For the Love of Flour is best described as a cozy, feel-good neighborhood bakery that leans heavily into nostalgia and homemade comfort desserts,” Jennifer shares. That sense of nostalgia isn’t accidental—it’s the foundation of everything she bakes.

Jennifer’s love for baking began in her grandmother’s kitchen, where she spent countless hours experimenting with leftover ingredients. “Every Saturday, my Gram would host a small gathering filled with desserts, laughter, and family warmth,” she says. “Those memories of cozy kitchens and sweet moments inspired everything I do today.” That inspiration is evident in every cookie, cake, and pastry she creates.

Originally from New Hampshire, Jennifer is a wife of 20 years and a proud mother of two. Family remains at the center of her life and her business. When she’s not baking, you’ll likely find her outdoors, recharging on a scenic trail or enjoying fresh air—something she says helps spark creativity in the kitchen.

The journey of For the Love of Flour began in January 2020, just before the world changed. Starting from her licensed home kitchen, Jennifer focused on cookies and sandwich cookies, building her business one porch delivery at a time. “It was just me, a mixer, and a lot of determination,” she recalls. “Those early days taught me everything about consistency, creativity, and the importance of showing up for your community.”

As word spread, so did demand. Jennifer expanded into wholesale partnerships with local cafés and markets, refining her recipes while maintaining the handmade quality her customers loved. In 2024, she moved into a shared commercial kitchen, and most recently, she’s taken her biggest step yet—opening her own storefront at Stony Point Fashion Park.

“This space has allowed me to fully bring the vision of For the Love of Flour to life,” she says. “It’s a place where customers can walk in, connect with the bakery, and experience everything in a more personal way.”

Jennifer’s customers come to her for all kinds of moments—big celebrations and everyday treats alike. “I love working with people to bring their ideas to life,” she says. “Whether they have a clear vision or just know they want something special, it’s about making the process easy and enjoyable.”

From custom cakes and cupcakes to full dessert tables and grab-and-go pastries, For the Love of Flour has become a go-to for both special occasions and spontaneous cravings.

Jennifer’s connection to the community shows up in more than just her baking. She regularly supports local schools, staff appreciation events, and theater program fundraisers, and makes it a priority to collaborate with other small businesses whenever she can. “Being part of meaningful local causes is something that is very important to us,” she shares.

She also offers a simple piece of advice to neighbors: “Support the small businesses in your community whenever you can. Every purchase, recommendation, and shared post truly makes a difference.”

At its core, For the Love of Flour is about more than dessert. “We want people to know it’s about handmade quality, creativity, and bringing people together through something sweet,” Jennifer says.

And in every bite, that intention comes through—warm, welcoming, and made with love. To indulge in some sweetness, place orders, and keep up with Jen’s latest creations, follow her at her website www.fortheloveofflourva.com and on Instagram at love_of_flour_va/!
