Goodman & Sons

A Family Legacy

The first generation: Lena and Stanley Goodman

Hello everyone – My name is Tony Goodman with Goodman & Sons Jewelers, a family-owned and operated jewelry store with two locations in Hampton and Williamsburg. The business started with my grandparents, and in fact, we just celebrated our 75th anniversary last year! As a long-standing member of the local community, we have had customers for decades who work with us, and it’s neat to see their kids (and grandkids!) come back for the same great care and service. Our customers come back repeatedly because of our focus on trust and relationships, knowing that our family stands behind our high-quality products.

I was first part of the business in the mid-to-late 1990s when we were much smaller. I took a different career path in corporate America for a while, and came back in 2014 when the family was looking for a new generation to take over. Jewelry is a unique field-a great business, with a longevity different from many other types of businesses. It has a lot of meaning and history, often spanning generations, and we love to hear customer stories behind their jewelry. When a customer shares their story, they share a piece of themselves and their past, and this kind of connection is the core of our business – to understand the meaning, love, and story behind the jewelry so we can best help with the purchase, care, maintenance, and repair to keep it lasting a long time. We do a lot of repair and restoration of older pieces– it’s an emotional and rewarding business!

We have built our business on four core values: Honesty, Integrity, Excellence, and Professionalism, and we apply these values both inward and outward. These values have shaped our interactions between our team members and with our customers. We have a highly trained team that is welcoming, gracious, and helpful. We want our employees to be able to make quick decisions to best help the customer. If something isn’t right, we look at how we can help. Our record of competent, friendly service with 70+ years of experience has built trust in our business over the years. We love it when someone says, “My mom and dad shopped with you back in the day, and now it’s my turn!” As a family business, we are able to pivot with the times and have the flexibility to run our business different than other “big box” jewelry stores. We strive to do the right thing, every time.

My passion is to create a great employee team, and I put a lot of effort to keep the team happy and motivated. We offer maternity leave, ample vacation, health care, and retirement benefits, and have even experimented with the 4-day work week. It’s all about our employees, as we cannot run a family business just by ourselves! They are the first impression of our company, and their physical and mental health is very important to us. Retail is hard sometimes, and we strive to create a healthy working environment so they can be there for our customers. They are passionate, hard-working, and are known for being experts. We find the right personalities and mold them into outstanding employees, supporting them so they can do their best. We have a great mix of younger and older employees – some are on their second careers with us, and we even have had customers who come back as employees!

We currently have a full-time appraiser, a full-time estate buyer, three bench jewelers, and the front-end team that interacts with the customers. We can restore items to bring back memories, appraise items to determine value, and also work with estates – our expertise is really anything in the jewelry world – we are full service, and if we can’t do it, then we have connections to people who can! We carry beautiful bridal sets, diamonds, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, pendants, rings, watches, all from the best designers. Don’t know where to start? Our excellent team is knowledgeable and can help you make the best purchase for what you need. If you have a piece that needs some love, we provide repairs, resizing, maintenance, and re-setting services.

As a family-owned business, family is of course very important to us. In my time off it’s all about our kids and dogs (and sometimes golf). We are active in little league and swim team, and have two Great Dane dogs. I would like to extend a warm welcome to stop by one of our stores to check out our wide selection of quality jewelry, meet our friendly staff, and see for yourself how we are different. We are here if you have any questions, and we are happy to help!

Cheers,
Tony
