Not Every Landscaper Starts by Asking to See Your Living Room
After designing landscapes for celebrity homes in California, Kevin Casper is bringing his artistic approach to River Ranch, creating outdoor spaces that reflect the people who live inside them.
When Kevin Casper meets a new client, he doesn't start by measuring flower beds or discussing mulch colors. He starts inside the house.
"I want to see how people live," Kevin says. "I want to understand their style, their colors, their furniture, and the feeling they're trying to create. The landscape should match the home and the people who live there."
It's an approach that has defined Kevin's career for more than 25 years. A graduate of the University of Akron with a degree in marketing, Kevin says some of his most valuable education came after college, when he spent several years traveling throughout Europe. The experience became both a people study and an art study, exposing him to different cultures, architecture, landscapes, and design styles that continue to influence his work today. Before relocating to Louisiana last year, he built a successful landscape design business in California, where he spent decades designing and maintaining properties ranging from private estates to celebrity homes. Along the way, he worked with a variety of high-profile clients, including actor Johnny Depp, whose property he maintained and redesigned for more than a decade, Emmy Award-winning choreographer Marguerite Derricks, actor and dancer Cris Judd, and many others.
But Kevin is quick to point out that celebrity clients aren't what make his work special.
"The project is what matters," he says. "Whether it's a celebrity, a business owner, or a family who's been saving for years to redo their landscape, my goal is always the same. I want to create something unique that fits them."
That philosophy followed him across the country when his fiancée accepted a position with an aerospace company in Acadiana. Kevin sold his California business and started over in Louisiana, a move that required much more than simply changing locations.
"Everything was different," he says. "The plants, the soil, the rainfall, the irrigation systems. I had to relearn a lot."
Rather than relying solely on his decades of experience, Kevin immersed himself in learning the unique challenges of landscaping in South Louisiana. Over the past year, he has attended numerous seminars, workshops, and training programs through LSU and LNLA, studying everything from local plant varieties and soil conditions to irrigation practices and emerging plant diseases. His background in irrigation, developed during years of working in California's dry climate, has proven especially valuable.
"In California, if your irrigation isn't right, your plants won't survive," Kevin says. "That experience taught me to pay attention to every detail."
Those details are what separate Casper Lawn & Garden from many traditional landscaping companies. Kevin describes himself as a designer first, irrigation specialist second, and maintenance provider third. He's not interested in rushing through projects or completing as many jobs as possible. Instead, he intentionally takes on a limited number of clients at a time so he can remain personally involved from start to finish.
"My projects usually take longer," he says. "I'm not trying to do ten jobs at once. I like to focus on one project and give it the attention it deserves."
That hands-on approach has already earned attention in River Ranch. One of his recent projects involved redesigning the landscape around the home of neighbors, Glenn and Cyd Begnaud. The project quickly became a conversation piece among neighbors, with residents regularly stopping to ask who created the design. For Kevin, that's especially rewarding because word-of-mouth has always been the foundation of his business.
Many of his best projects begin not with a quick sales presentation, but with a lengthy conversation. Kevin spends time walking the property, learning how homeowners use their outdoor spaces, discussing their personal style, and understanding what they hope to achieve.
"We walk the property. We talk about what they like and what they don't like," he says. "Sometimes the design evolves as we go. The best landscapes aren't always planned down to every detail from the beginning."
While many companies rely on similar layouts and plant selections from project to project, Kevin prefers creating landscapes that feel personal to each homeowner. He pays close attention to textures, colors, proportions, and how the landscape complements the architecture of the home. His goal isn't simply to install plants. It's to create an outdoor space that feels like a natural extension of the people who live there.
Today, Casper Lawn & Garden offers landscape design concepts, irrigation installation and troubleshooting, lawn maintenance, seasonal enhancements, and ongoing property care for both residential and commercial clients. But more than anything, Kevin sees himself as a collaborator.
If you're looking for a quick one-day transformation, he may not be your guy. But if you're looking for someone who will spend the time to understand your vision, obsess over the details, and create a landscape tailored specifically to your home, that's exactly where Kevin shines.
Because for Kevin, great landscaping happens when creativity, horticultural expertise, and attention to detail come together to create something truly unique.
