Worth the Move
Wyatt and Christine Parks traded five acres for a walkable lifestyle filled with friendly neighbors, nearby amenities, and plenty of ways to enjoy each day.
On any given afternoon, Wyatt and Christine Parks can be found on their porch, visiting with neighbors as they pass by. Their standard poodle, Noelle, and senior rescue cat, Honey, are likely nearby, competing for the lap each believes is rightfully hers.
It is a simple scene, but one that captures exactly what the Parks love about life in River Ranch: friendly faces, a walkable neighborhood and a strong sense of community just beyond their front door.
For Wyatt and Christine, making River Ranch home was a dream several years in the making. Wyatt is originally from Eunice, while Christine grew up in the Opelousas area. The couple was living in Ville Platte when they purchased a townhome near Town Square in 2018. They quickly fell in love with the neighborhood and decided that, once they became empty nesters, River Ranch would be their forever home.
In 2025, the time finally arrived. They traded their home on five acres for life “in the Ranch”, a decision Christine says she and Wyatt believed was best for their future, even if their daughters, Karina and Jillian, were not entirely convinced at first.
One thing the couple does not miss is the upkeep.
“Now, there is absolutely no grass to mow!” Christine says.
Today, they have embraced nearly every part of the River Ranch lifestyle. They play pickleball and work out at City Club, stroll through the neighborhood and walk to nearby restaurants. They enjoy the ahi tuna appetizer at Romacelli, old fashioneds at Pour and Romacelli, and drinks and oysters at the bar at Don’s, especially when it gives them a chance to visit with friends.
“Living in River Ranch is like a permanent vacation to me,” Christine says. “Exercising, walking, City Club, the pools, spa, massages, great music and restaurants. Who could want more?”
Their move marks a new chapter in a life they have spent building together for decades. Wyatt and Christine met in pharmacy school in 1983. They began as friends, eventually fell in love and have now been married for 32 years. Both became pharmacists and will celebrate 40 years in the profession in December. Through the years, the profession has given them countless experiences and accomplishments, but they agree that none compares with the family they created.
Their path to parenthood was not an easy one. In 2003, they traveled to Russia to adopt their two oldest children, Vic, who now lives in Dallas, Texas, and Karina, an undertaking Christine describes as “quite the experience.” Their journey also included eight years of infertility treatments before Christine became pregnant with Jillian at age 43.
“We are so blessed in every way,” she says.
Family remains at the heart of the Parks’ lives. Christine loves to cook for everyone, with meatball stew earning a place as a longtime favorite. Their holidays are filled with treasured Thanksgiving and Christmas traditions, from familiar foods to decorations collected through the years. Most importantly, Wyatt and Christine have worked to pass down their love of Cajun culture, teaching their children to take pride in their heritage and remain true to it wherever life leads.
That culture is also reflected in the music they love. Cajun and Zydeco are favorites for both listening and dancing, along with swamp pop, oldies and the music of the 1980s. On Saturday nights, they enjoy tuning in to the “Party Time” show on KVPI in Ville Platte. Jillian keeps them current on pop music, line dances and rising country artists, too.
When they have time to get away, the Parks enjoy visiting Sandestin, a favorite destination for roughly 30 years. Wyatt also spends time hunting, fishing and tending to their camp in central Louisiana, while Christine prefers visiting during the fall and winter. They have enjoyed a Viking cruise and are looking forward to another voyage to Normandy. Still, Christine says her ideal destination is anywhere her family can be together.
For the Parks family, this season of life is less about slowing down than savoring what surrounds them: family, culture, good food, familiar music and neighbors who quickly became friends.
And in River Ranch, they have found the perfect place to enjoy it all, preferably from the porch.
