Born to Score

With a striker's instinct and a relentless work ethic, STM senior Luke Finley has rewritten the record books and is just getting started.

Luke Finley has loved soccer for as long as he can remember, which happens to be most of his life. A 17-year-old senior at St. Thomas More, Luke has been playing soccer since age three, when he first stepped onto the field as a Turf Tykes player. Years later, he is still out there doing what he loves, and the game has given him far more than he ever expected.

What position do you play, and where do you practice?
I play striker for the STM Cougars and also compete with my club team, LA Krewe Rush. I split my time practicing at STM for the school team and with the club as well.

Have you had the chance to travel for soccer?
When I was 10, I got to represent the U.S. national team at the Donosti Cup in Spain, which was an experience I will never forget. I have also traveled to regionals in South Carolina, and this summer we are heading to Salt Lake City for regionals again.

What are some memorable moments from your time playing?
Getting to play in the State Final my freshman year was a big deal, and being part of multiple state finals with my club team has been really special too. This senior year, I earned first team all-state, first team all-metro, first team all-district, and offensive MVP honors. I also broke two STM records that had stood for 30 years, setting a new single-season record with 43 goals and becoming the program's all-time leading scorer with 71.

What has soccer taught you?
Soccer has taught me how to be a good teammate and how to work hard even when no one is watching. Those two things go hand in hand, and I think they carry over into everything else in life.

What do you enjoy most about the sport?
The friendships, without question. The relationships I have built with teammates over the years are something I will carry with me long after I stop playing.

Do you have a favorite moment so far?
Breaking those two STM records this year is definitely my favorite moment. To be able to leave that kind of mark on the program is something I will always be proud of.

What advice would you give someone thinking about getting into soccer?
Just try it. You will make so many new friends and it will help you get in shape.

What is next for you?
I am looking forward to playing college soccer at Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi.
