Giving Back
Red Tail resident Joanne Tokar finds purpose and community through volunteer service.
For Red Tail resident Joanne Tokar, volunteering is more than simply giving time—it’s a way to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families throughout Northeast Ohio. Since joining the Christ Child Society of Cleveland in 2023, Joanne has become actively involved in several of the organization’s outreach efforts, including the Layette Program, serving as Committee Chair for the Red Wagon Luncheon, and volunteering at the Showcase Resale Shop. Depending on the organization’s needs, she spends an average of about four hours each week supporting these programs.
Joanne’s connection to the Christ Child Society began long before she became a member. Her mother was involved with the organization for 24 years and deeply valued its mission of challenging childhood poverty in the greater Cleveland area. Inspired by her mother’s example, Joanne decided she wanted to be part of that mission as well. She says the greatest rewards are not financial, but personal: “The benefit of humility and humbleness. I want for nothing. When a child benefits from our hard work and dedication to the programs that Christ Child supports, it is my greatest reward.”
Joanne and her husband, Jay, moved to Red Tail nearly two years ago after deciding to downsize once their children had grown and moved out. They found a lot in Red Tail and built what they call their “forever home.” Since arriving, they have discovered that the neighborhood’s greatest asset is its people. “We have met such wonderful people—from our immediate neighbors to friends throughout the entire community. We are so blessed to be living here,” Joanne says.
When she’s not volunteering, Joanne enjoys golfing, reading, spending time with family and friends, volunteering, and the occasional exercise session. She and her husband are proud members of a large blended family that includes six children, seven grandchildren, and one more grandchild on the way. Joanne's commitment to helping children in need serves as a reminder that even small acts of service can create a lasting impact on countless lives.
