The Golub Family
Meet the Golub Family! Kira and Dewey, Maris (11), Fields (8), three year old Bernadoodle Fern, Guinea Pigs Mercury and Trouble and last but not least, Two Tails the fish. The Golub family, known for their commitment to community and love for adventure, have embarked on a new chapter of their lives, bringing their unique blend of passion and creativity to the charming neighborhood they now call home.
Dewey and Kira are both graduates of the College of Charleston, Dewey in 1998 and Kira in 2005. Dewey is originally from Rochester, Vermont but moved to Weston, Massachusetts when he was 8. Dewey moved to Charleston to attend The College of Charleston. Following graduation, Dewey traveled the world working on boats only to end up back in Charleston. Kira is originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan and moved to Charleston to attend CofC and never looked back. Dewey and Kira met at Kira’s dog's birthday party in 2006.
Dewey, with over two decades of experience in real estate, currently manages Found Properties Group, a brokerage that specializes in high-end off-market opportunities in Charleston. Additionally, he serves as the COO of The BTR Group, a residential development company pioneering the "build to rent" concept, providing homes for renters in the Southeast and Florida.
Kira found her love for design after working closely with the builder on their new construction project in the Old Village. Kira has since embarked on a career in design consulting and has really enjoyed being back on job sites!
Maris is currently a 6th grader at Buist Academy and Fields is a 3rd grader at Mount Pleasant Academy. Both Maris and Fields play soccer, Maris for Cainhoy and Fields for FC, as well as both play Tennis at the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department. Maris also plays on her school's Volleyball team, which Kira is entering her second year as coach. Maris is looking forward to joining the yearbook staff at Buist Academy this year and is hoping to start being a part of the Charleston Animal Society foster program. Anything to get more animals in the house! Fields has a large imagination and loves a good art project. “Kind and happy kids… That's the goal” says Kira.
The Golub Family loves to travel. Prior to COVID they spent four summers in Costa Rica which Kira says “was a magical time for the kids ages.” The Golubs have now spent three summers in Crested Butte, Colorado which has been awesome for Maris and Fields as they have gotten older and can do more things like mountain bike, hike and climb. Last year's spring break was spent on a Catamaran sailing in the British Virgin Islands which was one of their favorite trips together as a family. Dewey and Kira attended the US Open in New York City a few months ago and are planning to take the kids down soon. Kira says they “never turn down an opportunity to travel.”
The Golubs are somewhat new to the Old Village, they moved into their house on Simmon’s Street in March of 2022. They had spent the prior past year building their home with Level Building Projects and couldn’t be happier with how their home turned out. Before moving to the Old Village, the Golubs lived downtown, in the Wraggborough neighborhood, in a Charleston single for thirteen years. Post COVID Kira and Dewey felt that it was time their kids had a different neighborhood dynamic, which prompted their move.
Kira and Dewey try to be involved in the Charleston community as much as they can. Dewey has been cooking dinner for house guests at the Ronald McDonald House once a month for years; he also serves on the fundraising board at RMDH. Like Kira, Dewey has also done some coaching, he has coached both Maris and Fields in soccer through the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department. Kira spends as much time as she can volunteering at both Buist Academy and Mount Pleasant Academy.
In their free time, the whole family loves being outdoors whether it’s biking, boating, swimming, fishing, or surfing. When the weather keeps them indoors the Golub’s enjoy a game of Rummikub or a good puzzle. When asked where their favorite hangout area is, they responded with “not much better than the back yard or the beach” the Golubs truly love being outside. One of the family's favorite activities to do outside in the Old Village is go for a bike ride. Kira and Dewey are “people” people. Not much makes them happier than being surrounded by good friends – except maybe live music and traveling, Kira jokes.
The Golubs were truly worried about missing downtown, especially after thirteen years, but they can truly say that driving into the Old Village neighborhood everyday makes them so happy! They love seeing familiar faces and enjoy how friendly everyone is. They love that everyone in the Old Village truly cares about each other and the neighborhood as a whole. Kira and Dewey love a good drink at the Post House and the charming Pitt Street Pharmacy for the kids. I think it’s safe to say that the Golubs are more than happy in the Old Village!
