North on Highway 701 from here is the old "Muster Oak" which was an assembling place for Parish militia. Out here, also is Wappataw Church founded by first settlers of this Parish, 52 Congregationalists from New England who landed near Sewee Bay, (now Awendaw Creek), the site of Elbow Tavern of stage coach days.

This section, six miles from Mount Pleasant on Highway 701, is well known for its wiregrass baskets and art grass souvenirs. The art of weaving them is said to have been taught by the early settlers to their slaves and handed down from generation to generation.

During the Revolutionary War the point nearest Sullivan's Island (now Cove Inlet Bridge) was used for camping grounds and barracks for troops. Here on June 28th, 1776 when two battles were raging on Sullivan's Island, a floating bridge was hastily constructed of boats and casks. Over this went reinforcements and ammunitions from Mount Pleasant. This site was also the site of Battery Carey during the War Between the States.

From the above brief summery of Mount Pleasant’s part in the History of The United States, it will be easily seen that the people of this region have a rich heritage of tradi-tions, Because of the wealth of material from which to draw when writing the story of this vicinity, it is impossible to completly cover the subject in so small a space. The above, therefore. represents merely a few highlights in the story.
