Halston
Our first photo together
Hi! I’m Halston the mini dachshund, a three-year-old desert dog turned Southern gentleman. My mom, Whitney, and I moved from Scottsdale, Arizona to Charleston in 2022. It was love at first sight from the moment she accidentally reached for mybrother and realized the tiniest little one at her feet was me. I immediately recognized this was the beginning of a special journey together.
Whitney’s dad (my grandpa, “Pappy Nate”) was valiantly fighting stage IV pancreatic cancer at the time and frequently asked for “slinky dog,” his good luck charm, to come play. Ifully understood my assignment to provide endless comfort and joy. I helped dry tears and made my family smile again after hewent to heaven following a courageous 14-month battle.
When it was time to embark on a cross-country journey to Charleston, I behaved so well on the that plane no one believed there was a dog in my carrier. Not knowing anyone yet, I accompanied mom everywhere she went, happy to just be by her side. This included some rookie experiences such as being the only pup walking the beach in a giant life vest, learning to keep my singing low indoors – yes, I serenade my toys, and occasional nervous accidents on mom in busy public places. Wesoon discovered the Dachshunds of Charleston.
While the original intent was to get some exercise and doggie socialization (despite being named after a famous fashion designer, I’m a modest, shy guy who prefers cuddles on the couch over anything), this amazing community became some of our dearest friends. We learned our way around the best of downtown through monthly walks and subsequent coffee dates that turned into friends we see all the time and can’t imagine life without. Notably, my besties, Ollie and Teddy, and countless pups and pawrents who get very excited to see one another and can always count on the first Saturday of the month and fun festivities to look forward to (a big thank you to Wendy, the founder!)
We had no idea we’d be moving to Charleston when I was a pup, or that having (er, being) a dachshund would be such a lifestyle here, but it all feels very divinely guided with the help of our guardian angel. We are so grateful for the friends we’ve made and our beloved family who have since joined the fun, too.If you’re feeling like you could use more excitement in your life, adopt a dachshund and watch it flourish here. We’d love to play with you!
