The Best Time to Book Is Now (Yes, Even for 2027)
Every summer, I hear the same thing from neighbors and friends: “I can’t believe August is already here.” And right after that comes: “We should really plan a trip.”
If that’s you, here’s the good news: August is one of the smartest times of year to start planning travel — not just for the holidays, but for winter escapes and even big 2027 trips.
Why August is a sweet spot for planning
By late summer, people are back from their July getaways and starting to look ahead. At the same time, the travel world is already thinking in seasons:
- Holiday travel (Thanksgiving through New Year’s)
- Winter escapes (January through March)
- Europe and milestone trips (often 12–24 months out)
That means the best options — the best flight times, the best cabin categories, the best room locations, the best tour dates — tend to go first.
What to book now vs. what can wait
Here’s a simple way to think about it.
Book now
- Holiday travel
- If you want specific dates (school breaks, family gatherings, long weekends), planning early protects your choices.
- This is especially true for popular destinations and limited-inventory options like certain resort room types or cruise cabins.
- Winter escapes
- If you’re dreaming of sunshine after the holidays, now is a great time to start.
- The most convenient travel days and the most in-demand resorts and sailings can fill faster than people expect.
- Europe (and “big” trips) for 2027
- It may sound early, but for milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and “once-in-a-lifetime” itineraries, starting the conversation now is a huge advantage.
- Early planning gives you time to compare routes, pacing, and budget without pressure — and it often leads to a smoother, more enjoyable trip.
Can wait (sometimes)
- Flexible travel with wide date ranges
- Short domestic getaways where you don’t care about exact flight times
- Trips where you’re truly open to multiple destinations
Even then, I usually recommend at least starting the plan. A quick conversation can save you hours of scrolling and help you avoid the “everything good is gone” moment.
The real benefit of planning early
Planning early isn’t about spending money sooner — it’s about buying yourself options.
Options to travel on the days you actually want. Options to stay where you really want to stay. Options to choose the itinerary that fits your style — whether that’s relaxing, exploring, or a little of both.
And if you’re not sure what you want yet? That’s completely normal. Most people don’t.
