Shannon Kearney

A Journey of Resilience and Empowerment through Taekwondo

In the serene community of Murrysville, Shannon Kearney stands as a beacon of strength, resilience, and dedication. Beginning her taekwondo journey in 2007 under Grand Master Michael Caruso, Shannon's path has been anything but ordinary. After earning her first degree black belt in 2011, she took a break to focus on her family, nurturing her two sons, Alex and Andrew, and embedding herself deeply into the fabric of the community.

Shannon's return to taekwondo in 2019 marked a new chapter in her life. As a single mother, she balances her passion for martial arts with her unwavering commitment to her boys, who are actively involved in taekwondo as well as sports like baseball, basketball and swimming in Murrysville. She graduated from Franklin Regional High School in 2001 and is currently a 2nd degree Black Belt, she will be testing for her 3rd degree Black Belt this March. Her love for family extends to simple pleasures like dining at Juniper Grill, spending time with friends and family, and creating lasting memories for her boys during annual trips to Disney World and Rehoboth Beach.

Beyond the mats and her family life, Shannon is a testament to perseverance and courage. Her experience of being robbed at gunpoint while a student at the University of Pittsburgh was a pivotal moment, influencing her to focus more on self-defense aspects of taekwondo. She carries these lessons into her professional life as well, where she excels as a Clinical Trial Manager at ICON plc, a global clinical research organization, executing clinical trials focused on infectious disease/vaccine and CNS/rare disease. Earning her Doctor of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh, Shannon has 12 publications focused on medication adherence and health outcomes.

Shannon's role as an ATA Brand Ambassador is not just a title; it's a mission to raise awareness and visibility of taekwondo, which boasts over 130,000 members worldwide. Her personal story of empowerment through martial arts, especially after her traumatic robbery experience, makes her an authentic and relatable figure.

Her involvement in the community goes beyond her professional and martial arts life. Living in Murrysville since 1989 and being a part of the Mother of Sorrows Church, Shannon has established deep roots in the town. Her father, recognizing the importance of self-defense, encouraged her taekwondo training, particularly after the robbery incident.

Shannon's commitment to empowering others, especially women and mothers, is evident in her efforts to promote National Personal Self Defense Month. She organizes events like the women's self-defense class that was held in January followed by a social event at Juniper Grill, these events emphasize the importance of camaraderie, mental health, and wellness.

Her journey in Taekwondo, from a student to a black belt, to an ATA Brand Ambassador, and a role model in the community, reflects her belief in the lifelong benefits of martial arts. Shannon Kearney's story is not just about earning belts and medals; it's about the transformative power of taekwondo in cultivating confidence, resilience, and a sense of community.
