A Woodsman of Sorts

Your neighbor, Tony Whayne, is hoping to start turning wood full-time in the near future.

Wood has always been the medium of choice for this artist’s expression. The uniqueness and craftsmanship of his designs lead to word-of-mouth commissions for heirloom furniture pieces for friends and family.  Not being able to satisfy his artistic expression with furniture, Tony began turning bowls and quickly upgraded to segmented and woven pieces, discovering the wonders and beauty that exotic woods reveal.  The demand increased for his work. Today Tony’s artistic creations of hollow vessels and art originate first with his vision of the piece and what the specific character of the wood reveals.  The resulting pieces are a unique marriage of artistic vision, mathematics, and the natural beauty of wood. Each piece is turned through and through, never inlaid.

Tony’s relationship to the 3D world of his profession as a mechanical designer for plastic injection molds lends to each piece as he envisions the end result.

A discussion about retirement led to “when?” and “where?”  His company, Precision Design and Engineering, is active, and with retirement still in the future, the “where” became apparent after visiting the Emerald Coast for a few years.  Tony and his wife, Gail, moved to Hammock Bay from Colorado in 2015 and found a family of friends and artists right in their neighborhood.  Both love living here, enjoy the beach and meeting new people while having a delicious meal or cocktail at the many restaurants in the area.

Tony’s new workshop was built in a weekend with the neighbors and a real old-time barn-raising. You will hear him lament the size and wish it were twice as big, but as he says, “It works!”

Most evenings, Tony is in his “shop” or whipping up a perfect martini in the outdoor kitchen … just another of his “projects.”
