Chilly Chicken

On February 22, 2024, Hallsley and Tarrington residents were treated to a delicious buffet of authentic Indian cuisine at Saheb Indian Bistro.  Indian cuisine is incredibly diverse, with significant regional variations. Northern Indian cuisine, where owner Shyam Sharma hales from, specializes and stands apart from its southern counterparts. Unlike Southern India, where ingredients like coconut oil, peanuts, and certain fruits take center stage, northern Indian cuisine relies on different flavors.

"We use cloves, cardamom, ginger, garlic, as well as saffron," says Sharma, emphasizing the importance of aromatic spices in creating rich and complex flavors. Notably, he dispels the misconception that Indian food is uniformly spicy, stating, "People have the mentality that spicy means hot. We are not making 'hot' anything unless they want it."

The menu prepared by Chef Ashish showcased the variety of what Saheb has to offer.

Chilly Chicken is an appetizer of cubes of grilled chicken cooked with spring onions, chilies, and a touch of soya sauce.

Paneer Tikka Masala, the king of curries, is a British national dish with dice of bell pepper and onion in rich gravy enriched with butter and aromatic Masalas.

Lamb Korma is a royal dish with cashews and almonds-based creamy curry sauce flavored with a touch of cardamon and aniseed powder.

Tandoori Chicken is juicy boned chicken marinated overnight with yogurt and traditional spices and grilled in a clay oven.

Butter Chicken, golden chicken pieces in an incredible creamy curry sauce, is a favorite on their kid's menu.

Vegetarian dishes included the Choley Punjabi, garbanzo beans cooked with flavorful spices, and a Corn Spinach dish.  Rice and fresh Naan Bread accompanied all.

To wrap up the meal, we had a flavorful Rice Pudding and Gulab Jamun, a small ball of dough deep-fried and soaked in rose-flavored sugar syrup.
