The Horse’s Axe opened its first location in Denton on November 20th, 2020.  Perfect timing, right?  You might not think opening a business at the height of the pandemic was good timing at all.  But, the owners of The Horse’s Axe (Mike & Holly Roberts, Darin and Michelle Guynes) had a genius idea.  As they were considering how to keep people safe from a disease (think about all the hand sanitizers at stores back then), they started asking themselves, “how in the world can you sanitize the wood handle of an axe?”  The answer?…you can’t.  It’s not possible to sanitize wood.  Their solution?  They gave away a brand new axe to everyone who came in to throw.  Said Mike, ”When people first picked up their brand new axe and we told them it was theirs to keep, they thought we were joking with them!   But, we said: No joke.  You touch it, you own it!  You’re taking it home with you.  Plus, when you bring it back, you throw at a discount!”  This unique idea of taking home the axe spread like wild fire over social media.  Soon, people were traveling from all sides of the metroplex and even other parts of the country to take home their very own “Horse’s Axe”.  By March of 2021, a mere 4 months after opening, they had moved 2,000 axes and they were profitable!  This led to them opening their second location in historic Downtown Denison, Texas in August of 2022 and their first franchise which opened in Downtown McKinney, Texas in September of 2023.  Mike told us, “The growth is exciting!  We’re in conversations with other people about opening locations in other parts of Texas and Oklahoma.  We’ll see where it goes!”
