A Wedding Ceremony at St. Stephen’s Cohasset

We invite you to consider celebrating your wedding ceremony  at St. Stephen’s Church located in the heart of Cohasset!

Why choose a church wedding?
A wedding is a joyful celebration, and it is also a serious commitment. It is a sacred ritual that acknowledges your  desire to enter a lifelong relationship. It establishes a new  pathway into the future – one that you promise to travel  together. When you make your vows before God and the  gathered community of family, friends and the Church, you  receive the grace and blessing of God and the community to  help you fulfill your vows.

Why choose St. Stephen’s Cohasset? St. Stephen’s is a 120-year old church set on a rock perched  above the picturesque Cohasset town common. Your  wedding celebration will take place in our beautiful church  with its carved wood and stained glass, with room for up  to 200 attendees. Outside you can take advantage of our  landscaped courtyard, our towering steps, and the scenic  locations in this historic, seaside New England town.  We are a welcoming faith-community with the only requirement being that at least one of the couple should be baptized as a Christian. At St. Stephen’s we welcome all kinds of families and would be honored to share our church  to celebrate your wedding!

Officiant
Reverend Maggie Arnold is the rector at St. Stephen’s and  the wedding officiant. She will help you plan a beautiful marriage ceremony, a ceremony which a recently married couple described as one “that we will remember for the rest  of our lives – given the very different backgrounds of our family and friends, we never thought we’d find an officiant  so universally loved by all our guests.”

Pre-marital counseling
Pre-marital counseling is required to be married in the Episcopal church. If it is not possible to do the counseling with Reverend Maggie at St. Stephen’s in person, video conferencing can be used for the four sessions. Couples find that the counseling is a blessing and a respite, providing space “during a stressful planning process… helping us keep in touch with the joy and love we were celebrating.”

Readings and Vows
We have no strict guidelines about what readings you may choose, except that if you are having Holy Communion a reading from the Gospel is included. We follow the marriage service as it appears in the Book of Common Prayer, so couples use the standard wedding vows, which we believe are poetic and powerful. This is what you will say when you commit yourselves to each other: In the Name of God, I, N., take you, N., to be my wife/ husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for  better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and  in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death. This is my solemn vow.

Music
At your option, our accomplished organist, Dr. John Whiteside, can provide live music for your ceremony, and he also offers a unique opportunity: St. Stephen’s is home to a 57-bell carillon, which can add a unique musical element to your wedding day.

Flowers
Also at your option, flowers to be placed on the altar can be arranged by our outstanding flower guild, in consultation with you. For weddings that take place during the summer, many of our flowers come directly from the gardens of our parishioners.

Fees and Scheduling
Non-members are charged a usage fee that supports the preservation of our historic church building. There are also fees for church-provided music and flowers, if used. The current fee structure is part of the wedding booklet, which you can download at our website at ststephenscohasset.org/WeddingsWeddings may be scheduled any day, except for Sundays when the church is used for services throughout the day.
