Natural Stone Creations

Dan Hickey grew up in Columbus, IN, and graduated from Purdue, where he studied engineering and design. That led him to his first career as a fuel systems engineer at Cummins Engine Company, where he remained for 13 years. When an acquaintance approached him with the idea of starting a countertop business, Dan agreed. He says, “I figured if I could design a fuel injector, I could design with granite.” The business suffered a bumpy start, and they split ways. Dan then started Natural Stone Creations Inc. That was 22 years ago.

Dan reflects on how it was a blessing to have made the move from the corporate world to being a small business owner. He says, “At first, it was the thrill of ‘being your own boss’ that drove me. But, looking back, most importantly, it afforded me the flexibility to spend more time with my family.”

Dan remembers that when he started NSC, granite countertops were just becoming popular and affordable. There were very few fabricators in the Indianapolis area. Now there are over 70 granite shops in and around Indianapolis, giving customers many choices. He believes cost seems to have surpassed quality as the deciding factor when choosing a fabricator. Dan says, “Quality, attention to detail, and the ‘customer comes first’ have always been the keys to our success. I have stuck to those keys, have purchased new technology to improve manufacturing efficiency while still employing true craftsmen, and have kept my prices fair.” He also contributes word of mouth as his biggest advertising success, and after 22 years, he enjoys many repeat customers.

Dan cautions residents that the old adage “You get what you pay for” is still true, especially in this business. He adds, “Don’t be forced into a granite/quartz color that a fabricator has in-house because it is on special. Countertops are typically a one-time investment. Your kitchen is the focal point of your house and where you spend most of your time.” He encourages buyers to do a little research on the fabricators in their area. He adds, “Ask your neighbors who have had their countertops replaced. Was it a great experience? Bottom line, love your decision.”

After living in the Center Grove community for 27 years, Dan and Christine, his wife of 30 years, now live on Lamb Lake. Christine is the managing law partner at Rubin & Levin PC. They have two children — a son, Chase, and a daughter, Taylor.  Chase is an IU graduate and graduated from IU law school in May. Taylor is a Purdue graduate and currently attending Boston College Law, where she will graduate in May of 2023.
