Amazing Athletes

Sixteen-year-old Bethany Kannar has grown up right here in the neighborhood, and she’s making her mark in a big way as a proud member of the Westwood SunDancers. A sophomore with a lifelong connection to the community, Bethany brings both heart and discipline to everything she does, and it shows.
Having lived here her entire life, Bethany says her favorite part of the neighborhood is the people. There’s something special about a place where even a quick smile or a simple “how are you?” can brighten your day. That sense of connection carries right into her experience with the SunDancers, a team she describes as more than just a group, it’s a family.
Bethany’s journey in dance started early, at just three years old. Inspired by family friends and captivated by performances at local football games, she quickly fell in love with the sport. Today, she channels years of dedication into every routine, performance, and early morning practice.
One of her most meaningful memories didn’t happen under the bright lights, but just before stepping onto the stage. Before a performance called Escapade, the team gathered in their traditional circle, sharing speeches, memories, and encouragement. Emotions ran high as they reflected on their journey and the seniors they would soon say goodbye to. For Bethany, that moment captured what makes the SunDancers so special: deep friendships, shared passion, and genuine support for one another.
Balancing academics and athletics takes commitment, and Bethany has found her rhythm. Mornings are dedicated to dance, often starting bright and early, while afternoons are focused on schoolwork. It’s a routine that requires discipline, but she handles it with maturity well beyond her years.
Through dance, Bethany has learned the value of respect, something that’s reinforced daily through simple but meaningful habits like acknowledging coaches with a “yes ma’am” or “yes sir.” Those lessons have shaped not only her as an athlete, but as a person.
Looking ahead, Bethany has her sights set on auditioning for the SunDancer Social Board, with hopes of becoming a junior social. Her advice to others? Go for it. Join the SunDancers, build lasting friendships, and be part of something truly special.
Say hello to Bethany when you see her, and let her know you're cheering her onto many more great years ahead!
