Sophie Carr

A Cheerleading Champion

Sophie Carr, a 17-year-old senior at Winfield High School, and the daughter of Steven and Kim Carr, The Carr family has called the Castleknock subdivision home for the past 15 years.

After graduating from WHS this spring, Sophie shared, "I plan to attend West Virginia University and major in Communication Sciences and Disorders. My goal is to become a speech pathologist. I was in speech in elementary school, so I would like to help others overcome speech issues." 

Sophie is an active member of the Winfield High School community. She is a cheerleader, and a member of the National Honor Society, and Key Club. Sophie is also involved in her local church, St. Timothy’s in-the Valley Episcopal Church, and works as a lifeguard at Sleepy Hollow Pool.

Sophie's cheerleading journey began in her sophomore year when she transitioned from being a competitive gymnast to trying out for the WHS cheer team. "I decided to end my gymnastics career and try out for the WHS cheer team. This would allow me to represent my school, which is something that was missing in gymnastics," she shared.

Her dedication to cheerleading has resulted in numerous accomplishments for the WHS cheer team. Sophie recounted, "My junior year, we were the 2022 regional champions and the WV AA State Runner-up for traditional cheer. We also attended UCA High School Nationals again where we placed 5th in the nation."

This year, as a senior, Sophie and her team have achieved even greater heights, clinching the title of WV State Champions for game day, 2023 regional champions, and the coveted WV AA State Champions. Sophie's impressive achievements and contributions to the cheer team showcase her passion for the sport.

Expressing her love for cheerleading, Sophie emphasized, "I love the friendships and the bonds that we have created as a team. We are a big family and would do anything for each other. I also love representing the Generals and the community of Winfield." She shared with Stroll Winfield, “I feel my love for cheer shows on the floor. I love leading our fans and cheering on Winfield. I’m also a strong tumbler and jumper," she noted.

As far as maintaining a balance in her life, Sophie shared, "I am very organized. I’ve had to be from a young age.  I use a planner and prioritize what all needs to be done."

Sophie finds inspiration in her coach, Natalie Zingmond, "I admire her.  Every day she pushes us to be 1% better than the day before and to leave our hearts on the floor. The amount of time she invests in our program and us is inspiring."

Sophie's dedication, passion, and positive spirit serve as an inspiration. Her journey reflects a commitment to representing Winfield with pride and excellence.
