Now that Halloween is over, the costumes are put away but the candy is still here. Enjoying treats is part of the fun, but here are a few tips from Dr. Andrea Monestero, to help protect kids’ teeth while they finish their trick-or-treat stash.

  1. Choose candy wisely
Chocolate dissolves quickly and doesn’t stay on teeth long. Sticky, chewy, sour, and hard candies cling to grooves, are more acidic, and take longer to finish—raising cavity risk. Ask your dentist if sealants are a good option to protect back teeth.

  2. Skip acidic drinks
Sugary drinks increase acid in the mouth and weaken enamel. Limit energy drinks, soda, sports drinks, and even flavored sparkling water. Water is best—add fruit or sugar-free additives if you want more flavor.

  3. Timing matters
Have candy with or right after a meal when saliva production is highest. Brush and floss afterward—or at least rinse with water.

  4. Healthy swaps
Xylitol gum or hard candies can boost saliva and reduce cavity-causing bacteria.

  5. Help at home
Kids need assistance brushing effectively until about age 8, and flossing even longer. Electric toothbrushes and water flossers can help—especially with braces.

  6. Keep dental visits positive
The AAPD recommends the first dental visit by age 1 and cleanings every 6 months. Making visits fun and comfortable reduces anxiety and helps catch issues early.
