Pura Vida with the Smiths

From jungle hikes and cloud forests to beach days and sloth sightings, this Costa Rican escape was a wild and wonderful family adventure.

This summer break, Stacy and Dustin Smith took their 3 boys, Sebastian (12), Lincoln (10), and Summit (8), on an adventure of a lifetime to Costa Rica where they saw the life of other people and animals halfway across the world. The Smiths were off adventuring for a week and a half. From St. Louis, they took a flight to Houston and then took another flight to San Jose, Costa Rica, where they stayed at the DoubleTree Inn. In the morning, they had a wonderful breakfast of fruits, vegetables, and great Costa Rican pastries.

Then the adventure began when they headed out to their next stay in La Fortuna. On the way, they saw wonderful mountains, lots of animals, and the amazing cloud forest. All the way up in the mountains in the north of Costa Rica, there is a rainforest called the Cloud Forest where you can walk through the jungle and see lizards, hummingbirds, and maybe, if you're lucky, you can spot a jaguar lurking in the jungle. You can also go ziplining and do the Tarzan swing across the jungle.

After the Smiths made a stop at the Cloud Forest, they continued their adventure to La Fortuna. When they got there, it was getting late, but the adventure continued for the night jungle hike through the rainforest, where they could see sloths, bullet ants, Jesus Christ lizards, king toads, cockroaches, and some Costa Rican birds. In the morning, they had another very healthy breakfast and did lots of swimming. The Smiths also made some new friends all the way from New Zealand and London, England, who were also staying at the resort.

Next, they went off to a magical resort that you would never forget in Chachagua, where they were greeted with a nice view of the rainforest, their own hot tub, and a huge back deck. They only stayed one night, but it was worth it. For the next 5 days, they stayed in Tamarindo by the beach. At the Tamarindo resort, the amenities were a huge public pool with a tiki bar and a living space of 2 bed, 3 bath, and a big kitchen and living room. On the resort you could also see howler monkeys and other animals like big iguanas, sloths, cats, and other different species of monkeys.

The Smiths said that the resort was beautiful and if they could, they would definitely stay again. The beach was great for the kids where they could take surf lessons and rent boogie boards and surfboards if they would like. You could also have dinner in different restaurants. Summit and Lincoln said that they loved picking up the hermit crabs and showing people in the restaurants. On the last day, the Smiths said it was sad when they had to leave because it was one of their best vacations yet.
