Say Hello to the Twin Tuxedo Cats, Dan and DJ!

These lookalike brothers may be hard to tell apart, but their playful antics and big personalities make them unforgettable.

Dan and DJ are brothers who live in Wildhorse with the Sun family, who moved to the neighborhood in the summer of 2021. The twin cats belong to Xiaojun “Liz” Li and Qingan “Quin” Sun, along with their three kids: Sunny (16), Aland (13), and John (11). Not too long after settling in, Dan and DJ joined the household.

The adoption story is one of those classic “we were just looking” situations. The family stopped by PetSmart at Chesterfield Commons just to see the cats. As Sunny puts it, “We went in just to look at cats, because… they’re adorable, you know?” But when Liz bent down to look at Dan through the glass, he stood up and placed his paws against it, trying to get closer to her. It was love at first sight.

They asked about adopting Dan, only to find out he was bonded with his brother DJ. Of course, they couldn’t separate them. They also later realized that the two cats share the same birthday as Sunny. It felt like it was meant to be. That is how they went from zero cats to two in one afternoon. Meanwhile, Quin was in the car resting and had no idea the family was about to grow!

Since then, the twins have been a little spoiled. If they want something, they usually get it. Sunny remembers that as soon as they adopted them, her mom started ordering cat trees and buying treats and toys. If there is a door closed anywhere in the house, especially Sunny’s room, they dash in the second someone opens it. For the most part, Dan and DJ do normal cat things. They sleep, eat, play, rub against furniture, and chew on cardboard. The family has tried buying laser pointers, but they tend to break within a few days. Luckily, the cats are just as entertained chasing light reflections on the wall, like when you tilt your phone just right and the light bounces off.

Even though they look almost identical at first, there is one easy way to tell them apart. Dan is a shorthair, while DJ has medium-length fur and looks a little fluffier. One of the funniest memories happened about a year after they adopted the cats. Even though many of their toys came with catnip, they did not use it at first. Then one day, they decided to sprinkle some into the cat scratcher just to see what would happen. It immediately turned chaotic. The twins rolled around, buried their faces in it, and playfully fought over the scratcher. At one point, Dan even started licking it.

Dan and DJ may be a little chaotic sometimes, but they have definitely brought a lot of fun and energy into their home. What started as a simple trip to “just look” at cats ended with bringing home two surprise twins who have become a full part of the family.
