A Basement with Personality

Upgraded kitchenette/bar area with a paneled ceiling to match the accent wall

The Xavier family (Rajesh, Mary, Stephen (12) and Kaitlyn (9)) moved into their Highlands home two years ago, and one of their favorite spaces is the basement. This vast area soon became their go-to spot for family movie nights, ping pong matches, and enjoying delicious meals together. They often hosted friends and family, making cherished memories in this cozy setting.

Despite their love for the basement, Mary felt it needed a personal touch. With Rajesh’s enthusiasm for do-it-yourself (DIY) projects, they decided to kick off their home transformation project by creating an accent wall centered around the huge TV. This simple, yet effective, update made the movie nights for the Xaviers more enjoyable. With the success of the accent wall, Rajesh took it a step further by transforming a huge closet in the basement into a kids’ cave. He added wall panels, a TV and a fresh coat of paint for the younger members of the family to play games and have fun.

They didn’t stop there. The existing bar island, while spacious, had a standard wood plank that needed an upgrade. As Mary scrolled online gaining inspiration from a variety of pictures, she quickly realized this was beyond a DIY project. The Xaviers decided to contact JQ construction, the company recommended by their realtor to discuss the ideas and plans. The bar transformation included upgraded granite but also a stylish stone backsplash and a paneled ceiling to match the accent wall.

Mary said, “The team at JQ construction was skillful and their seasoned expertise bought the families ideas to life. Without the team, she wouldn’t have been able to capture the essence of the photos and turn them into reality.”

The Xaviers say the end result was exactly as pictured, and if you gave them a second chance of remodeling, they wouldn’t have it any other way. Some advice that Mary and Rajesh would give to people thinking about sprucing up their living space, is “Whatever renovation you want to do, it should reflect on who you are and the joy you share.”
