Spotlight on Whit

Young Theatre Enthusiast Takes Center Stage in Whitley Place

Whitaker Motes, (Whit) is an accomplished and talented 8th grader at Rogers Middle School, where his energy and creativity shine through his participation in the UIL Theater program. His journey with theater began in 6th grade when he chose it as a fine arts elective, and from there, he quickly developed a love for the stage.  In 7th grade he took the role of Ben  in "The Yellow Boat" and received the All Star Cast award and helping his group take 2nd place in the competition. In November of this year he took the lead as Jack in “The Storm in the Barn” where his performance again earned him the All Star Cast award and another 2nd place finish. His experience in the Theater Production class at Rogers Middle School not only enriched his life artistically but also propelled him into the world of acting outside school. It opened doors to an acting studio and representation by both local and LA agencies, laying the foundation for Whit's ambitions in the acting industry.

Beyond the stage and spotlight, Whit is an aspiring traveler. He set a goal to visit all 50 states by the age of 20 and he is well on his way with 23 states already conquered. A few unforgettable highlights are a trip to Alaska where he witnessed the breathtaking Northern Lights, visiting New York City, and LA, and a trip to Washington DC.

Whit draws inspiration from his parents, viewing them as role models who instilled in him the values of hard work, kindness, and integrity. Teachers have also been a vital part of his growth, encouraging him to venture into new territories and never lose sight of his dreams. Notable favorites are his 5th grade teacher Mrs. Grace Mendoza, who continues to support Whit and many of his shows, and his 6th grade ELAR teacher Mrs. Fein.

Whit aspires to attend a university that has a strong film or stage production program so that he can ultimately attain his goal of becoming an actor. Some of the universities he’s looked into are Princeton and NYU, but he has plenty of time to decide. He will be a 9th grader next year and the new Walnut Grove High School and he can’t wait to be part of that amazing, new campus.

Whitley Place has been great for Whit. Moving here from downtown Atlanta, GA was a huge change. Having so many younger kids in the neighborhood helped him form great friendships that continued throughout the summers and sparked his favorite hobby, fishing, which he enjoys doing in the Whitley Place ponds. He also loves exploring all the trails and outdoor areas Whitley Place offers.
