Margie Singleton- A Voice for Early Breast Cancer Detection

When Pooler resident Margie Singleton was diagnosed with breast cancer, her journey didn’t stop at treatment—it sparked a mission. What began as a personal health battle became a statewide movement that’s now helping women across Georgia take charge of their breast health. Margie has spent the past seven years advocating for earlier detection of breast cancer, and her efforts led to the passage of Margie’s Law, enacted in Georgia in 2019.
Thanks to her dedication, Margie’s Law ensures that all women in Georgia receive crucial information if their mammograms show dense breast tissue—an important detail that can make cancer more difficult to detect. The mandated notification reads:
“Your mammogram shows that your breast tissue is dense. Dense breast tissue is very common and is not abnormal. However, dense breast tissue can make it more difficult to detect cancer through a mammogram. Also, dense breast tissue may increase your risk for breast cancer... Use this information to talk with your health care provider about whether other supplemental tests... may be appropriate for you, based on your individual risk.”
For many women, this simple paragraph is life-changing. It empowers patients to have informed conversations with their doctors and to seek additional testing that could make all the difference in early detection.
Margie’s Army Foundation—formed to support this cause has made a long-lasting impact on women’s healthcare within the state of Georgia. Her message to the Westbrook community is simple but powerful: share this information. Spread the word to your mothers, sisters, friends, and neighbors. It could save a life.
Margie has lived in Pooler for eight years and loves the sense of community that surrounds her. Though her family members aren’t directly involved in the foundation, her advocacy has touched countless lives throughout the state.
From one woman’s determination grew a law that is now protecting the health of thousands. Margie Singleton has made a difference—and continues to, one conversation at a time.
