Herbert and Brenda Singleton: Fifty-Five Years of Love, Leadership, and Lasting Impact

For the past ten years, Herbert and Brenda Singleton have called the Fairways at Savannah Quarters home — but their story of faith, family, and service stretches far beyond Pooler. The couple recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary, marking more than five decades of partnership, purpose, and a shared commitment to giving back.
Originally from Georgia, Herbert grew up in Liberty County, while Brenda hails from Hartwell. Their paths first crossed at Morris Brown College and the Atlanta University Center, where they graduated in the same class — a meeting that would spark a lifetime together. Shortly after marrying at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado, the newlyweds began their journey with a military assignment at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, where Herbert served in the U.S. Air Force.

After completing his service, Herbert and Brenda relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where they built both their family and their careers. Herbert rose through the corporate ranks, beginning in computer technology at Lincoln National Life Insurance Company and advancing to Vice President of Technology and Investments. Brenda’s career in human resources spanned more than three decades, during which she held leadership roles including Personnel Manager, Employee Relations Manager, and ultimately Manager of Human Resources before retiring after 33 years of service.

Their passion for service and mentorship extended far beyond the workplace. In Fort Wayne, Herbert organized and chartered a Federal Credit Union, serving as volunteer CEO for a decade, while Brenda established a Human Resources Department at their church. The couple also taught English as a Second Language (ESL) and tutored students online after retirement — continuing to invest in others through education and faith.

Since returning to Georgia, the Singletons have become deeply rooted in the Savannah and Pooler communities. Together, they serve as active members and co-leaders of the senior ministry “Renewed Perspective” at Overcoming By Faith Ministries. They’re also dedicated volunteers with AARP Savannah, where they advocate for local and state initiatives through the AARP Advocacy Committee. As founding members of the Pooler Juneteenth Celebration Committee, Herbert serves as Chair of Finance while Brenda leads the Volunteers Committee — roles that reflect both their leadership and compassion. Herbert is also a member of the Beta Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, serving as Parliamentarian, and Brenda contributes to the Fairways Community Relations Committee.

When they’re not volunteering, Herbert and Brenda enjoy quiet weekends watching football and movies, as well as their shared love of travel. Together they’ve visited 34 states — including Hawaii and Alaska — and have explored Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Some of their most memorable journeys include an awe-inspiring Alaskan cruise through Glacier Bay and a once-in-a-lifetime adventure through South Africa, where they visited Cape Town, Swaziland, Durban, Johannesburg, and Soweto. They’ve even ridden camels in Dubai and held falcons in Abu Dhabi. Herbert often captures these experiences on video, creating keepsakes they love revisiting after each trip. Their next dream destinations include Italy, London, and Spain — a long-anticipated Mediterranean adventure they still hope to take together.

The Singletons are proud parents to two daughters, Wanda (married to Alfred) and Chante’ (married to Corey), and doting grandparents to their granddaughter, Layla, a talented dancer and high school student in North Carolina. Family time remains their greatest joy, and they cherish every opportunity to gather, reminisce, and celebrate life’s milestones.

After years of meaningful work, travel, and service, Herbert and Brenda continue to find purpose in community and connection. “We enjoy living in Savannah Quarters and Pooler,” they share. “We love being back in Georgia, closer to family, and having everything we need — great restaurants, shopping, and even the beach — just a short drive away.”

Herbert and Brenda Singleton exemplify what it means to live fully, give generously, and stay grounded in faith. Their story is one of dedication, love, and an enduring commitment to making a difference — both near and far.
