Sophie Liebenberg: Making Her Mark

Sophie and classmates from the Trent Lott Leadership Institute

Hi neighbors! My name is Sophie Liebenberg, and I’m honored to be this month’s Young Achiever. I live in Wellsgate with my awesome family—my parents Ivonne and Andre, my twin sister Chloe, and my younger brothers Lucas (11) and Noah (8). Our dog Coco is basically the sixth sibling!

This summer, I attended the Trent Lott Leadership Institute for rising 9th graders—an amazing program where I learned about public policy, legislation, and leadership. I was nominated by my school, Regents School of Oxford, and got to meet students from across the state and beyond. It was both fun and inspiring.

In August, I started the 9th grade at Oxford High School. I’m excited to join the drama program and debate club. I also play sports, including cross country, track, and archery. Over the years, I’ve received a few academic awards like 2nd place in the MAIS state spelling bee, Summa Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam, and an Augustus on the Universal Latin Exam.

Outside of school, I love spending time with my family, painting, reading (I’m currently into Invisible Women), and playing the piano—I’ve played since I was 8. My sister and I also tutor kids in grades K–5, helping with homework and teaching Spanish. If you’re interested, feel free to email me at liebenbergsophie@gmail.com.

I’m also passionate about volunteering. My family has gone on mission trips to Ecuador, teaching Bible School in jungle villages. Last year, we served with Blue Skies in Florida, helping a family whose child was undergoing cancer treatment. Locally, I help teach Sunday School and volunteer in the nursery at The Orchard.

When I’m not busy with school or activities, I love hanging out at home, reading, riding bikes, watching The Chosen or Madam Secretary, and eating sushi (Rice & Spice is my favorite!).

Sophie, thank you so much for sharing with Stroll Wellsgate! We look forward to following you through your high school years!
