Back to School & Community Safety
As a new school year begins, let’s work together to keep Wedgewood safe—slow down, stay alert, and protect our community’s children.
As August transitions into September, the return of school routines marks a shift for many families in our neighborhood. Early mornings, packed lunches, backpacks by the door—it’s all back in motion. With the excitement of a new school year also comes a heightened need for awareness and care throughout our community, especially when it comes to street safety.
Wedgewood is home to many school-aged children, and during the morning and afternoon rush, our sidewalks and streets see a lot of activity—kids walking or biking to bus stops, parents dropping off little ones, and buses making frequent stops. We kindly request that all residents make a conscious effort to drive more slowly in the neighborhood. Even a slight speed reduction can make a significant difference in preventing accidents.
It’s also important to stay vigilant near bus stops. Ohio law requires all drivers to stop when a school bus has its stop sign extended, whether you’re behind the bus or approaching from the opposite direction on an undivided roadway. Never attempt to pass a stopped bus. These moments of loading and unloading are among the most hazardous for children, and your patience truly helps keep them safe.
As many families adjust to new schedules, we encourage everyone to allow themselves a little extra time in the mornings. Leaving five or ten minutes earlier can reduce stress, minimize rushing, and contribute to a calmer, safer environment for everyone in Wedgewood.
If you’re a parent or guardian, this is also a great time to review safety tips with your child—remind them to walk on sidewalks when available, to cross at corners, and to never assume a driver sees them. If your children ride bikes or scooters, now is a great time to check helmet fit, brakes, and lights.
Our neighborhood thrives because of the care we show one another. Whether it’s waving to a neighbor on a morning walk or driving a little slower because a child is near the curb, these everyday choices reflect what makes Wedgewood such a special place to live.
Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe, thoughtful, and welcoming as we enter a new school year.
