Family First: Dentist Finds New Roots in Texas

Dr. Salvatore Pizzino was raised in the Bronx, New York City. One memorable day in seventh grade, while tossing a baseball in front of his home, his neighbor Tony—who would later become Salvatore’s brother-in-law—invited him to visit his dental school at NYU. Tony, who lived just a few houses away and was 15 years his senior, had always been a role model for Salvatore. With his mother’s blessing, he accompanied Tony to the dental school, where he was immediately captivated by the array of dental tools. Tony handed him a denture that required some adjustments and said, “I know you’re good with your hands, so do you think you could trim this by following the lines?” Once Salvatore got started, he realized that this was his calling; he decided right then that he wanted to become a dentist.

However, life took a tragic turn when he lost his mother during his sophomore year of high school. This profound loss turned his world upside down, and he nearly lost his will to live. After graduating from high school, he recognized that he had strayed from his dream and resolved to refocus on his ambition of becoming a dentist. He successfully gained early acceptance into dental school, and since then, he has dedicated himself to becoming the best dentist possible. Upon graduating from NYU dental school, Tony shared valuable advice: just because he graduated didn’t mean he understood the world of “dentistry”. Dr. Pizzino took this to heart, spending the next ten years learning from some of the best dentists across the country, with Tony mentoring him along the way.

Ten years ago, Dr. Pizzino, then a dentist in New England managing two practices, and his wife decided it was time for a change. They sought a warmer climate, a slower pace, and a great environment to raise their children. His family was shocked to learn he would leave his successful business, but he was convinced it was the right move for his family. In a fortunate turn of events, he sold his first practice in November 2019 and the second in February 2020, just as COVID-19 began to spread. Once it became clear that schools would not reopen soon, they made the decision to relocate to Waco.

In December 2021, Woodway Family Dental opened its doors amid the pandemic. Dr. Pizzino viewed this timing as ideal, as it allowed him a soft opening to acclimate to his new community and settle his family. Additionally, it provided him with the opportunity to dedicate one day each week to volunteer work, helping those in need.

Dr. Pizzino is a proud graduate of the New York University College of Dentistry, a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry, and holds fellowships in both implant dentistry and orthodontics. He continuously strives to learn and improve himself.
Furthermore, Dr. Pizzino serves his country as a Commander in the Dental Corps of the United States Navy Reserve, currently supporting the 4th Dental Battalion, 24th Dental Company, based in Houston, Texas.
