The Williams Family Story with Rhino Shield & Galaxy Concrete Coatings
Jason Crawford, Jim Williams, Terry Andre, Bryan Ley
Jim Williams has never been afraid of change. Growing up, his family moved often because his dad served in the cavalry and even spent years driving a tank while patrolling the Berlin Wall. By the time Jim reached high school and college in Missouri, he was used to starting fresh. That adaptability would serve him well in business later on.
After graduating in 1989, Jim started out in finance, but it wasn't long before he shifted into the home improvement world with AMRE, a Sears affiliate. “I was fortunate to learn marketing, sales, and business management during those years,” Jim said. AMRE moved him and his wife, Karen, from Buffalo to Indianapolis as his career grew. When the company closed in 1997, Jim decided to create his own path and start a business.
That path eventually led him to Rhino Shield in 2002, a unique exterior paint product with a 25-year manufacturer’s warranty. What began in his Indianapolis home expanded into six major cities, including Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. By 2019, those businesses were sold, and Jim and Karen moved to Scottsdale, a place they had their eye on since visiting in 2012. “Karen’s allergies cleared up when we were here, and she felt so energized,” Jim explained. “That’s when we knew this would eventually be home.”
Jim didn't stay retired for long. Later in 2019, he launched Rhino Shield in Phoenix, which has since expanded into Tucson and Denver. Phoenix has been named Rhino Shield Dealer of the Year for five straight years.
Family has been part of Jim’s business journey from the start. He and Karen have been married for 33 years and are proud parents to two adult children. Their daughter Hayley, who lives in Fishers, Indiana, encouraged Jim to launch Galaxy Concrete Coatings during the pandemic after her sales job was cut. “She really pushed me to start the business with her in Indianapolis,” Jim said. Today, Hayley and Jim’s son Nathan, who lives in Denver, are both involved in Galaxy. The company has grown quickly, with locations in Phoenix, Tucson, Denver, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati, and has been the number-one Penntek dealer for three years running. “Galaxy is also the exclusive concrete coatings contractor for all 55 Arizona Home Depot stores,” Jim added proudly.
Customers have taken notice too. With 25 testimonials airing on KTAR radio, the feedback highlights the quality, professionalism, and peace of mind homeowners have gained from both Rhino Shield and Galaxy projects.
What sets both businesses apart is the long-term value they provide. Rhino Shield’s ceramic technology helps lower cooling costs while protecting stucco. Galaxy’s polyurea and polyaspartic coatings come with lifetime manufacturer warranties. Jim likes to remind homeowners, “Be careful with lifetime warranties from contractors. A manufacturer’s warranty has more value because contractors come and go.”
When Jim and Karen are not working, they enjoy the energy of Scottsdale and are looking forward to welcoming their first grandchild in January. “Family has always been at the heart of everything we do,” Jim said.
With a proven track record of growing trusted businesses and a strong commitment to customers, Jim Williams and his family are focused on building a legacy that lasts.
