The Rich History and Community Engagement of Topsfield Historical Society

The Gould Barn

The Topsfield Historical Society, whose members number in the hundreds nationwide, was established in 1913. Its mission is preserving, maintaining and interpreting Topsfield’s history, including the 1683 Parson Joseph Capen house, and the 1710 Captain Joseph Gould barn.

Capen was minister for over 40 years, from 1683 until he died in 1725. He had a critical role in the early establishment of the new village called Topsfield and was a moderate voice during the witch hysteria of 1692. His wife was Priscilla Appleton of Ipswich.

In the 1990s our organization preserved the Captain Joseph Gould barn that stood on a nearby property, and reconstructed it on the Parson Capen House property; it is similar to one Joseph Capen would likely have had during his time there.

The Barn serves as the meeting place for our monthly programs and performances and is also available on Mondays through Thursdays for civic, town organizations and non-profits at a special rate. Typically, Fridays through Sundays the Gould Barn can be rented for private events such as showers, birthday parties, and weddings. Rental income is put toward the maintenance and preservation of the house, barn and grounds. As you might imagine, the upkeep of such historic structures is a costly responsibility.

In addition to the property, there is also a vast collection of photos, books, records and other historical documents, housed in a special records room.

The Society also administers the John Kimball Memorial Scholarship, which was established by his family to assist local students with their educational expenses. Each spring generous scholarships are given out to several area students.

Lastly, we organize many educational, cultural and entertainment events during the year, perhaps best known being the Strawberry Festival. These events are free and open to the public.
The Gould Barn is a great place for an event, wedding or gatherings of up to 95 people. The barn boasts a fully equipped kitchen, restrooms, and modern conveniences in a rustic, small-town setting. The Barn is booked into late 2023. Call or email for more information to reserve your event for 2024! 978-219-4940/events@gouldbarn.com
