Coalition for Kids!

The Coalition For Kids is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides after-school programming to help under-resourced children with homework, math skills, reading, character building, spiritual guidance, healthy extra-curricular activities, afternoon snack, and a hot supper.  With a mission to help children grow in wisdom and stature and in favor of God and man, we aim to ensure the children of our community not only have appropriate supervision after school and into the evening hours but access to trained tutors and caring staff and volunteers who assist them in achieving their educational goals.

The level of support extends to more than just help with homework. C4K is a critical support system for children and families — the safety net that catches them when they are slipping through the cracks. Many barriers impact student success. Family engagement, overall health – specifically nutrition – and risky behaviors are leading factors that inhibit learning and lifelong outcomes. Our programs affect these barriers by building strong, positive relationships with families and including health and wellness education in our curriculum. We seek to care for the whole child, not just through intervention but through positive youth development that builds strong, resilient children equipped to handle whatever adversity they may face.

The Coalition For Kids has been serving children and families in our region for over 20 years. We are a faith-based, nonprofit agency that began in 1998 as a grassroots effort planted within one of the lowest income, highest crime areas in Johnson City, TN. Local business leaders and concerned citizens envisioned a safe environment where the children and youth of this impoverished community could gather for academic assistance and enrichment activities. Since opening our doors in March of 1999, the Coalition has grown from one main site serving 25 students to partnerships with the Johnson City School System, Johnson City Housing Authority and several area churches. Today, C4K serves over 400 children from eleven Johnson City schools and one Bristol City school. The 2022-2023 school year is our first step in expanding our after-school programming into all Washington County and Bristol City Schools serving over 2,000 more children!
