How To Create A Watercolor Ocean Sunset
Have you ever watched a sunset and noticed the beautiful, vibrant colors that blend into the sky and wished you could look at it forever? A sunset watercolor painting is special because you can create a picture to enjoy all the time! In this paper, I will explain how to make a remarkably beautiful watercolor painting showcasing both the sun and sea!
Before you begin, you will need to gather supplies. Get water, paintbrushes, and paper towels. You will also need watercolor paper, watercolor paints, painters tape, colored pencils and a sharpie. Finally, make sure you have a clean workspace because moms do not like paint explosions.
Step 1: Prepare Your Paper. First, grab your tape and tape all four sides of your paper and the horizon line. Next, imagine the sunset you want to make. This helps you visualize what you want to put on your paper.
Step 2: Wet The Sky Area. After your paper is ready, dip your paint brush into the water and gently wet the sky area of your paper. Be careful to not have any puddles. This step is important because if there are puddles, your paint will not blend as well.
Step 3: Add The Colors. Now you can add your colors. You can use pink, blue, yellow, or orange.
Dip your brush and start painting. As the colors touch, gently start to stroke side to side to patiently blend them into new colors.
Step 4: Blend The Colors. Gently add more water to help the colors blend together. The more water you use the lighter the colors and the better they blend. Less water creates darker, more bold paint colors and lines. These techniques help create the most beautiful sunset horizon. Leave a small space in the middle of the horizon line to paint the sun.
Step 5: Add The Ocean. Let the sky dry completely before painting the ocean so the sky and sea don’t mix. Once dry, take the tape off the horizon line. Next, grab some different shades of blue and paint your ocean. Paint using side to side strokes. Use less water towards the bottom as this creates some white patches. This makes the water look more realistic and wavey.
Step 6: Add the Sand. After your ocean dries, blend some pretty browns, oranges and gold paints together to create the sandy beach. You can tilt your paint brush straight up and down and make small dots to make it look more like sand.
Step 7: Final Details. Finally, slowly peel all your tape off to reveal a clean white border. If you want it to look more realistic, you can grab colored pencils or sharpie and draw birds in the sky, sea shells on the beach and a big bold sun! Painting a watercolor sunset is so fun and relaxing. By following these steps, your sunset should look fabulous. When you finish, praise your work and set it on display!
Step 8. Clean Up. Clean up your workspace and put away all your supplies so your mom will let you paint again.
