Matt Parker & The Deacons
Keeping Live Music Authentic and Alive!
If you’ve ever caught a performance by Matt Parker & The Deacons, you already know that this isn’t just another cover band — it’s a musical experience built on heart, soul, and raw talent. Matt Parker, the band’s frontman and founder, has poured decades of passion into perfecting his craft and creating a sound that’s as genuine as it is electrifying.
Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Matt’s musical journey began early. After high school, when his family relocated to Texas, he made the bold decision to stay behind at just 17 years old — determined to chase his dream of playing music for a living. “I was on my own, but I knew this was what I was meant to do,” Matt recalls.
After several years playing guitar in different bands, Matt found himself needing a new start — and that’s when the beach came calling. In 2003, he moved to Myrtle Beach and started fresh, forming a new band and, eventually, learning to sing so he could take full creative control. “I realized that if I wanted to have a real impact on the music scene here, I needed to be the one telling the story through the songs,” he explains. That decision became the foundation of what’s now Matt Parker & The Deacons, featuring Matt on lead vocals and guitar, Jeremy Davis on drums and vocals, Mark Ahearn on bass and vocals, and Matt’s wife, Kelly, on lead and harmony vocals.
“About a year and a half ago, I wrote a song called My Whole World about Kelly and asked her to sing on the recording,” Matt shares. “After hearing her voice on the track, I knew she needed to join the band.” Kelly, a Socastee High and Coastal Carolina University alum, stepped away from her corporate management career and now shares the stage as a full-fledged Deacon. Married for 18 years, the two live on the south end of Myrtle Beach — truly a dynamic musical duo.
Matt’s mission has always been clear: deliver authentic, high-quality live music. “We don’t use pre-recorded tracks or auto-tune — everything you hear at our shows is created in that moment,” he says. “We believe in the authenticity of real live sound.” That authenticity shows — the band’s performances are packed with emotion, technical skill, and a contagious energy that connects deeply with the audience. Whether it’s a soulful original or a powerful cover of Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, or Fleetwood Mac, Matt Parker & The Deacons put their whole hearts into every note.
The band’s impressive catalog includes five albums of original music, all available on major streaming platforms. Their latest release, a four-song EP titled Tales from a Hippie Campfire, dropped in January 2024. Each song reflects Matt’s personal storytelling style and his dedication to songwriting. “I pay to have my music recorded professionally because I want to give our fans something they can truly enjoy,” he says.
In addition to their full-band performances, Matt and Kelly also perform as an acoustic duo for more intimate settings. “We bring everything needed — sound equipment, lights, and the music,” Matt says. “All we need is a good spot and a power source. We love creating memorable moments wherever we play.”
Beyond the stage, Matt and his band are deeply involved in the local community. They’ve partnered with Caspin Coffee and the Bloom & Brew Coffee Project, a nonprofit supporting special needs children. “We volunteered and donated our performance to help with their fundraiser,” Matt says proudly. They’ve also supported other local causes, including Lillypalooza, the Surfrider Foundation Oyster Fest, and the Bloody Mary Contest.
Of course, every business faces challenges — and for Matt, learning to balance creativity with business sense has been key. “Sometimes to grow, you have to say no,” he admits. “It’s not always easy, but I’ve learned to set standards for our band and only take gigs that align with our goals.” That focus has paid off — this year, the band played the Conway River Fest, opening for Night Ranger in front of an enthusiastic crowd. “The sound crew was amazing, the audience was incredible — it was just an unforgettable experience,” Matt says.
Looking ahead, Matt is excited about new music and new opportunities. “I’m always writing and recording,” he says. “My dream is for one of my songs to be picked up for a TV show or movie someday.” He’s also thrilled to be part of the Dunes community and is eager to perform at more local private and community events.
The band will soon play their first Coastal Carolina Tealgate game event — a full-circle moment for Matt. “A few years ago, I dyed my hair teal — the same color as my guitar and shoes — and the CCU football team used to come see us play at Hot Fish Club,” he laughs. “They even brought a group down on a bus! So, CCU will always have a special place in my heart.”
As for advice for aspiring musicians, Matt keeps it simple: “It’s never too late to learn to play an instrument. Start with YouTube tutorials, and once you’ve got the basics, invest in lessons to refine your skills.”
For nearly two decades, Matt Parker has been a fixture of the Myrtle Beach music scene — but he’s not slowing down anytime soon. With his talented bandmates, his wife by his side, and a loyal fan base, Matt continues to bring people together through the power of live, heartfelt music.
