Atwood: Fine Architectural Cabinetry
When Design Meets Vision in The Cliffs
Kris and Julie Atwood moved to the Valley in 2015, drawn by mountain views and the vibrant community nestled between Greenville and Hendersonville. What they discovered here has become both home and inspiration for a firm that transforms houses into personalized sanctuaries.
Kris Atwood grew up the son of a cabinetmaker in the Detroit area. He earned a degree in architecture and launched his own design-build firm in 1981. Over the next 25 years, he built a thriving business specializing in interior architectural transformations. In 2007, however, the economic outlook in Michigan had changed. A family vacation to Asheville turned into an exploration of professional possibilities, and connections with Valley residents Kris knew through a national buying group encouraged the Atwoods to consider Greenville seriously. After several scouting trips, they made the leap south.
Julie joined the firm 25 years ago after a career in occupational therapy and healthcare management and now oversees the firm’s administrative operations. Together, they opened a showroom in downtown Greenville, where they lived for eight years. They later added a second location in Asheville, North Carolina. When they decided to move midway between the two, the Valley won them over almost immediately. “We fell in love with the Valley on our first visit,” Julie recalls. “Put an offer on our home after the second visit!” They appreciate having neighbors from across the country and the diversity of backgrounds that brings to the community.
The business's name, Atwood: Fine Architectural Cabinetry, often leads people to assume cabinetry is all they do. However, Kris has builder’s licenses in both North and South Carolina and it is not unusual for a project to involve moving load bearing walls, stairwells and even fireplaces. The Atwood experience begins with listening and asking thoughtful questions to ensure each project reflects the client’s specific needs. Services range from design and space planning to CAD drawings and renderings, architectural modifications, custom cabinetry, lighting, plumbing, flooring, countertops, appliances, professional installation, and full project management. Kris has been involved in many homes throughout the Cliffs, some even before construction began.
“Given Kris' background in both architecture and building and his years of experience in interior architectural transformation, he is uniquely qualified to envision what any space could become,'” Julie explains. Kris also holds himself to strict project timelines, adhering to schedules set at the outset and often exceeding client expectations. His approach combines distinctive design that achieves comfort, function, and efficiency with a timeless appeal, translating financial resources into both a sound investment and a beautifully finished project.
The Atwoods have three daughters: a composer in New York City, a nurse practitioner married to a Greenville deputy sheriff, and an attorney in Greenville. They also enjoy spending time with their three grandsons in Greer. After nearly two decades in Upstate South Carolina, the couple still has friends and family in Michigan, but Greenville is undeniably home. Their passion for excellence in design, service, product, and execution continues to shape interiors across the Valley and beyond, one thoughtfully crafted space at a time.
