Meet Augustaʻs ELVIS!

Meet your neighbor and young ambassador Liam Hewitt. A 20-year-old Elvis Tribute Artist (ETA) from Augusta, GA, Liam is the grandson of native Augustans Matthew and Louise Mulherin and the son of Jeff and Mayclare (Mulherin) Hewitt. He is new to the ETA world and was destined to become a tribute artist after a chance meeting with an ETA World Champion who, after hearing Liam sing, encouraged him to enter competitions.  In 2021 he entered his first competition in Tupelo, MS (the birthplace of Elvis Presley), and placed in the top 10.  He immediately realized he had become part of a special family and part of a brotherhood in the ETA world.  Liam has continued competing across the country for the past 16 months and consistently places in the top three of most competitions. He returned to Tupelo this June to compete in the Ultimate Elvis Competition, where he placed 2nd and was voted on by the fans to win the People’s Choice Award (raising over $2,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital). He recently won the King of Memphis competition during Elvis Week in Memphis, TN.
The first time he heard Elvis sing Blue Christmas, he was hooked, and it wasn’t until his voice changed that he realized he and Elvis sang in the same key.  His untrained and natural likeness to the sound of Elvis’s voice is what sets him apart and makes him unique.
Liam’s jumpsuits are custom-made by B & K Enterprises, which has the rights to the authentic patterns used to create Elvis’s suits. They were given these rights by Gene Doucette and Bill Belew, the original designers. They also made all the jumpsuits for the new movie Elvis. Liam has had the opportunity to meet Elvis’s pilot, Ron Strauss.  He’s been judged by friends of Elvis Presley, such as Gary Buck of the Stamps Quartet and Lowell Hayes (the jeweler to the King), who traveled regularly with Elvis on his private plane, the Lisa Marie!  The highest compliments he receives are from the fans who regularly comment on the authenticity of his voice. His international fan base continues to grow with a Facebook fan page of over 1,000 members! Liam has created a business singing locally, while his greatest joy is volunteering at events such as The Best Night Ever, a prom-style event for young adults with special needs, and entertaining at assisted living facilities in the Augusta area.  He says it’s a true pleasure to see the joy on the faces of people who remember and tell stories of seeing Elvis in concert.

LIAM IS AN ELVIS TRIBUTE ARTIST, NOT AN IMPERSONATOR. There is a difference!  There are hundreds of ETAs around the world whose goal is to pay tribute to the greatest singer of all times in the most authentic, respectable way possible. They consider themselves ambassadors who want to continue the legacy of this iconic man. Liam feels it is an honor to carry on the legacy of a man who was kind and loved his parents and his country.  Elvis gave anonymously; he lent his name and image to many organizations to raise money and awareness. Faith and God were at the forefront of all Elvis did, and those values Liam admires as much as he does Elvis’s music. He hopes to make Elvis proud each time he steps on stage. The ETA world is a fascinating sub-culture.  It’s an art, it’s a family of good friends, it’s great entertainment and it’s fun.  Ultimately, it is about keeping the legacy of Elvis Presley alive, a philanthropist who lived the following:

Luke 12:48: “To whom much is given much will be required.”

This past August marked the 45th anniversary of Elvis’s death and Elvis Week in Memphis, TN. The event draws over 35,000 fans annually. The industry is very excited about the renewed interest in the King. Tribute artist shows are selling out across the country.  The hopes are, of course, to introduce the younger generation to the timeless music of Elvis. The recent release of the biopic movie by Baz Luhrmann, Elvis, has grossed over $270 million worldwide and $120 domestically.  Liam has one thing to say about that!  “Elvis has NOT left the building!”

Be sure to follow Liam’s social media platforms for local performances or join his fan page on Facebook to be part of his journey (he has his eye on next year’s Ultimate Elvis World Championship Competition and is on a trajectory to capture that title!). His inaugural concert, "One Night with You," will be held on Nov. 10, 2022, at the Hardin Auditorium in Evans, GA.  Tickets are on sale now (go to www.LiamSingsElvis.com). Limited seats are available!

If you are looking for something fun to do, jump in the car! Take a road trip. Catch a show; go to an Elvis festival and competition. Believe me; you will discover a world of some incredibly talented singers and entertainers, quaint towns, cool theater venues, great restaurants … but also some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
