Faith in Action: How a Summerfield Farms Couple Helps St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy Lift Oth
A Summerfield Farms couple discovers the power of giving through a Buffalo ministry built on compassion and community.
When a couple from Apple Blossom Boulevard first heard Amy Betros, cofounder of St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy, speak at a parish event in Elma, they were moved by the heart and humility behind her message. Amy shared stories of feeding the hungry, clothing families, and providing shelter for those in need—all without government or diocesan funding.
That message inspired the couple to take action. What began as small donations for the toy and meal programs at Thanksgiving and Christmas grew into deeper involvement across many of St. Luke’s ministries. From supporting the meal program and baby room to contributing toward the new facility for homeless men, they found a meaningful way to make a difference. “St. Luke’s is so involved in caring for people—it’s just awesome,” they shared.
Founded in 1994 by Amy Betros and the late Norm Paolini, St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy at 325 Walden Avenue in Buffalo has become a true beacon of hope. Each week, hundreds of people receive meals, clothing, and compassion through the mission’s outreach. The Mission Mall provides free household goods and infant supplies, and the Build Promise project is creating a permanent housing and support center for those without a safe place to call home.
This Summerfield couple also feels grateful to be part of a wider network of parish volunteers who support the mission. Parishioners from St. Gabriel’s regularly come to St. Luke’s on Thursdays to help distribute food—canned goods, frozen items, and other essentials—ensuring that every guest who comes through the line goes home with something to help their family.
Their story shows how one family’s generosity can ripple outward and strengthen an entire community. “We just wanted to help,” they shared. “But once you see how much good they do, you can’t help but stay involved.”
