The Heart of the Aranzas

The Aranzas share the faith, family, and love guiding their growing family.

I first met Joseph and Richelle Aranza separately, both times at kids’ birthday parties. In the middle of busy rooms filled with noise, movement, and little ones running around, what stood out immediately was how personable they both were. At different moments, each of them gave me their full attention, engaging in genuine conversation, listening with care, and offering words of encouragement and positivity without even realizing the impact they were making. Their kindness felt natural and all-encompassing. It was clear that their joy runs deep, and that they embody the heart of Jesus in the way they love and show up for others.

For Joseph and Richelle Aranza, life is rooted in faith, family, and intentional connection. Along with their children, Jon-Wesley, age five, and Elle, age two, they are embracing this season of life in Sugar Mill Pond with open hearts, full calendars, and plenty of laughter.

Joseph and Richelle’s story began in their early twenties during a season of meaningful transition for both of them. Richelle had never been to church and found herself at a fork-in-the-road moment when she decided to drive to the church with the big silver cross. There, at Our Savior’s Church, she experienced a life-changing moment. A few months later, through a mutual friend, her path crossed with Joseph’s, and what felt like a simple introduction quickly became something much more.

Joseph had been raised in church but was also stepping into a deeper, more personal faith of his own. On their first date at Tsunami downtown, they talked for hours and quickly realized they shared the same dreams, values, and hopes for the future. It truly felt like love at first sight. One year later, they were engaged, two years later, married, and now, more than ten years together, they are blessed with two children and a life they are deeply grateful for.

The Aranzas proudly describe themselves as Cajuns through and through, with both Joseph and Richelle having one Hispanic parent and one Lafayette-born parent. Joseph’s father jokingly refers to their heritage as “mexi-coon,” a blend that has shaped both their culture and their close-knit family values.

Today, Joseph and Richelle serve as campus pastors at Our Savior’s Church, where their calling extends far beyond Sunday services. They strive to live out their faith by loving God and caring for those in need, guided by the reminder found in James 1:27. Whether it’s praying with someone over the phone, visiting a hospital, comforting a family at a funeral, or officiating a wedding, they consider it an honor to walk with people through every season of life.

At home, life is lively and full. Joseph loves hunting, working out at the Sugar Mill gym, and songwriting. Richelle loves hosting, cooking big Cajun meals, tackling DIY home projects, and shopping, especially at her favorite local spot, The Gift Pod. Cajun food is at the heart of their family meals, and they are even in the process of creating a family cookbook that includes three generations of recipes.

Their children keep them busy as well. Jon-Wesley is fully immersed in all things Youngsville Sports Complex, playing basketball, soccer, t-ball, and now flag football. Elle dances year-round in ballet at the Academy of Christian Arts. When it’s time to relax, the Aranzas’ dream day includes a gumbo simmering on the stove, kids playing in the backyard, and football on the television.

They love living in Sugar Mill Pond for many reasons, especially the friendliness of their neighbors and the walkable nature of the community. Whether grabbing coffee at Huya, walking to the park, or spending a rainy day at Rowe & Co., they appreciate how quickly this neighborhood has become a place of connection and support.

“As Easter approaches, we’re reminded that hope is alive, grace is real, and new beginnings are possible for everyone,” says Richelle. “Whether you’ve been in church your whole life, never been, or it’s been a long time, you are truly welcome just as you are.” The Aranzas would love to personally invite their neighbors to celebrate with them at Our Savior’s Church Lafayette, located on East Broussard. Easter service times will be held at 8:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 11:30 a.m., and the Aranzas would be honored to share this meaningful celebration alongside their Sugar Mill Pond neighbors.

If you see Joseph and Richelle around the neighborhood, don’t hesitate to introduce yourself. Offer them a warm Sugar Mill Pond welcome, start a conversation, and embrace the kindness they so freely give. Chances are, you’ll walk away feeling encouraged, seen, and uplifted, just like I did.
