JAFCO Hosts Better Together Gala, Raising $1 Million

Mara and Mel Gober

JAFCO hosted the 2021 Jacob’s Ladder Award Gala, Better Together, at The Polo Club of Boca Raton, raising funds for abused and neglected children and those with developmental disabilities in South Florida.

This year’s event featured a cocktail reception, fine dining, silent auction, and a heartwarming presentation about JAFCO’s life-saving work. Attendees were treated to entertainment from Emmy award winner and stand-up comic Judy Gold, who has had specials on HBO and Comedy Central.

“It was so special getting together to celebrate life and our life-saving mission,” said Janet Epstein, JAFCO Philanthropy Director. “There are no words to adequately thank our incredible JAFCO family for their dedication to our children and families. We have realized more than ever before that we are truly better together.”

The Gala was highlighted by the presentation of the prestigious Jacob’s Ladder Award for Child Advocacy to two couples who have been dedicated to protecting abused and neglected children in our community: Beth and Jack Greenman and Mishelle and Keith Singer. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Mara and Dr. Mel Gober.

The Gala also welcomed nine new families who joined or recommitted to the JAFCO Godparent Circle, joined the Circle of Hope or Silver Heart Society. The Godparent Circle is a group of donors who pledge to spiritually adopt all the children JAFCO serves in its group home, emergency shelter, and family preservation programs. The Circle of Hope supports families raising children with developmental disabilities.

Events like the Gala help the organization serve its mission to provide safety, love, and security to abused and neglected children as well as those with developmental disabilities through its many programs including family preservation, foster care, adoption, mentoring, group homes, and a 24-hour emergency shelter.

All proceeds benefit JAFCO, a nonprofit organization licensed by the state of Florida’s Department of Children and Family Services to serve abused, neglected, homeless, at-risk, and developmentally disabled children in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties.
