2023 Arts Festival First Place Winner Francoise Lama-Solet with Sheila proudly showing off her First Place award!

For Sheila Crumrine, a cherished resident of the Edinburgh neighborhood for 12 years and a Suwanee local for 26, art isn't just a pastime—it's a vibrant thread woven into the fabric of her life. As the Board President of the Suwanee Arts Center and co-chair of the Suwanee Arts Festival, Sheila is deeply committed to nurturing creativity within the community.

Scheduled for April 13th and 14th, 2024, at Suwanee Town Center, the Suwanee Arts Festival stands as a pinnacle event for the center, drawing over 200 artists who will showcase an array of mediums. From pottery to painting, jewelry to woodworking, the festival promises an enriching experience for every art aficionado. "We're thrilled about the Paws & Shop Pet Piazza this year," Sheila remarks excitedly. "Our community loves their pets, and we wanted to make sure they could be part of the festival too. Brian Galgano will be offering pet portraits, and we have some great vendors lined up. I know that most pets in the Edinburgh subdivision need a new portrait or sweater!" Sheila's enthusiasm is endearing as she shares her vision for the festival's inclusivity.

Entertainment will grace both the Northside Hospital sponsored Stage and the steps in front of City Hall, with the NGHS Drumline and Jazz Bands igniting Saturday morning's festivities. Attendees can look forward to a diverse lineup, from the elegant movements of the Gwinnett Ballet to the captivating rhythms of Parama Roy Bardhan's Bharatanatyam dance. "We've worked hard to ensure there's something for everyone," Sheila notes proudly. "From local talent like Brett Ryder to international acts like Nero Simon & the Sunsetters, we want to showcase the richness of our community."

Sunday will see the festival kick off with the Stayin’ Alive dance company, followed by the Big Band Sound of the Metro Jazz Club, along with performances by international dance teams and emerging artists throughout the day.

The Emerging Artist Tents will spotlight talents like Jayna, a middle schooler renowned for her handmade scrunchies, while the Authors' Tent will feature readings from local writers.

Food enthusiasts will not be disappointed, as a tantalizing array of culinary delights awaits, from freshly popped kettle corn to gourmet crepes from Lisa's Creperie.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the festival, attendees can peruse artist booths showcasing pottery, painting, photography, jewelry, and more. Notable artists like Vicki Johnson and Lee Brambry will be present, alongside a curated selection of artists in the Members Tent.

Sheila ardently believes that Suwanee's vibrant arts scene is one of the city's greatest treasures. Her commitment to art education and community enrichment is evident through her involvement with various initiatives, including the Art for All committee and the Veterans Memorial Committee. Witnessing the emotional impact of these projects, particularly in collaboration with artists for the memorial project, has been profoundly moving for her.

Sheila's dedication extends to mentoring the next generation of artists, evident in the thriving Suwanee Youth Arts Council, which organizes exhibits and events for young artists. "Just two years ago, we had zero artists under the age of 30," Sheila reflects. "Today, we have a thriving Youth Arts Council comprised of students from four high schools in the area." Sheila's pride in the youth's contribution to the arts is evident in her voice.

Beyond the festival, the Suwanee Arts Center offers numerous opportunities for community engagement, from the Tuesday Tea series to artist critiques and classes on photography and social media marketing. Sheila invites everyone to explore the center's offerings, from popular Bob Ross painting classes to unique experiences like glass blowing and Stop Clay Animation camps.

With over 200 local artists exhibiting annually, the Suwanee Arts Center continues to be a hub of creativity and enrichment for the community. Sheila hopes that residents will seize the opportunity to participate in the center's classes, workshops, and events, fostering a culture of creativity and camaraderie in Suwanee.

Sheila shares from her heart "We have an amazing and fun Board. We all care passionately about the Arts in our community. The Arts in Suwanee are one of the best parts of the city. I remember as my kids were in school, and serving on the PTA boards, it was always my goal to budget to keep the Arts at the forefront of our budgets. It was a natural progression for me to become more involved with the Arts in Suwanee. I love that our city is so immersed in the Arts. It's why we live here and are involved."
