From Beijing to Atlanta

Miaomiao Wang shares her story - A Pianist’s Journey of Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose

Twenty years ago, I made the boldest decision of my life—to leave behind everything familiar in China and pursue my dream in the United States. At the time, I had just graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China’s most prestigious music school. I was offered a secure teaching position at the Conservatory, but something inside me knew I wasn’t finished learning. My heart was set on collaborative piano—a deeply rewarding art form that combines the pianist’s voice with vocalists and instrumentalists in musical partnership.
With a full scholarship, I traveled to Baltimore to study at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, where I earned my Master’s degree. That was just the beginning. I continued my studies at the New England Conservatory and Boston University, ultimately earning my Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 2017. However, my journey wasn’t just about degrees and titles. It was about growth, struggle, and transformation.
When I first arrived in the U.S., I faced what many international students experience—culture shock, financial pressure, language barriers, and deep loneliness. I often doubted myself. There were days I could barely afford to eat, days when I missed home so much it hurt, and days when I questioned whether the sacrifices were worth it. But through every hardship, I held on to three things: faith, family, and music.
My persistence paid off. I went on to teach at the University of North Texas in the Opera Department, serving as Assistant Music Director, and also worked with The Dallas Opera. In 2022, I was honored to be invited to head the Collaborative Piano Department at Georgia State University. Around that time, I welcomed my greatest joy—my daughter. I stepped back from my career to embrace motherhood, and now, as she nears two years old, I am ready to return to what I love most: teaching.
I started playing piano when I was just three years old. I understand the dedication, patience, and consistency it takes to truly excel. My teaching philosophy is built on that foundation, with a deep understanding of both discipline and compassion.
Now, I am opening my private teaching studio here in the community, focused on medium to advanced level piano students (minimum three years of study). Whether your child is preparing for competitions, college auditions, or simply wants to deepen their artistry, I will guide them to the next level. My students have gone on to win major competitions and pursue professional music careers, and I tailor every lesson to each individual’s needs and goals.
I teach piano in Mandarin Chinese and English, and I bring to each lesson my professional experience and the life lessons I’ve gained from two decades abroad—patience, resilience, and adaptability.
I would love to hear from you if you’re looking for a passionate, experienced, and nurturing teacher for your child. Let’s make music together—and unlock the potential waiting to be discovered.
