When Mike Libretto opened his first pizzeria in New York City in 2004, it was something of an impulsive leap of faith. “I didn’t know much about pizza at the time,” he admits. “I just knew I could learn in the best city for pizza in the country. I wanted to build a place reminiscent of the neighborhood pizzerias I grew up going to.” That decision led to Libretto’s Pizzeria, which he brought to Charlotte in 2009 and ultimately made his permanent home in 2012. That same year, he met his wife, Kimberly, and the couple now share their lives with their beloved pup, Hendrix.

Since opening in Ballantyne in 2010, Libretto’s has become more than a place to grab a slice—it’s a community fixture. “We’ve been feeding Ballantyne for 15 years and have developed incredible friendships,” Mike says. “We’ve watched families grow up. We know our regulars’ lives and their families. Libretto’s is like the Cheers of Ballantyne.” That family feeling extends to the staff, many of whom have been with the restaurant for years.

Of course, the food itself earns just as much loyalty. Libretto’s menu offers the kind of authentic New York pizza that folds perfectly in your hand, from classic cheese and pepperoni to creative specialty pies. The offerings go beyond pizza, too—think hearty pasta dishes, fresh salads and Italian favorites like chicken parmigiana and garlic knots.
