Dawn and Scott Isensee

Whether they’re hiking or cruising scenic highways, the Isensees are always up for an adventure!

Dawn and Scott Isensee have quietly become two of the most active and inspiring residents around. Coming from Austin, Texas, they’ve called St. George home for the last eight years — drawn by a desire to retire somewhere with natural beauty, active living, and a strong sense of community.
Their retirement criteria were clear: a place big enough to offer amenities, small enough to avoid big-city stress, and close to skiing — without the hassle of shoveling snow. The couple enjoys an active lifestyle full of hiking, skiing at their condo in Brian Head, and connecting with others through programs like the Institute for Continued Learning (ICL) at Utah Tech. “ICL is amazing,” Dawn shared. “There are about 80 different courses taught by volunteers, and I lead the hiking group.”
Before retirement, both had impressive careers in the tech industry. Scott worked for IBM and holds over 60 patents, along with authoring five books. Dawn worked in user support and on-site computer repair for small and middle businesses. “I never thought I’d work in tech, but I just said yes to new opportunities, even when they scared me,” she said. “That’s how I grew.”
Despite their busy work histories, it’s their post-retirement life that seems even more packed. Dawn is deeply involved in community volunteering. She’s a member of the Southern Utah Ladies Society (S.U.L.S.), a nonprofit that raises funds for local charities. “We just raised over $9,000 for RSQ, an animal rescue, through a fashion show,”
Scott and Dawn also belong to several car clubs. “We’ve got five cars, including a Corvette, a Studebaker, a Bricklin, and a Datsun Roadster,” Scott said. They often take scenic drives or show their cars at different events.
Then there’s Sky — their beloved mini golden doodle and perhaps the true star of the household. “She’s the most photogenic of us all,” Dawn joked. “She loves watching the neighbors from our deck and has become a familiar face around the neighborhood.”
Dawn and Scott are always willing to say yes to an adventure or serve in the community. Whether it's leading yoga classes at the clubhouse, participating in the Senior Games, or hiking Spring Creek Canyon (Dawn’s favorite), they’ve found a way to stay connected, active, and fulfilled.
So, what’s the biggest lesson they’ve learned along the way? “Be ready when something happens,” Dawn said. “Take chances, even when you’re unsure. You never know where it might lead.”
