Roaming Narratives:

Stories from Finland, Estonia, and Denmark

Are you ready for a magical winter adventure? Join us as we recount a multi-family trip to Finland, Estonia, and Denmark. From chasing Santa Claus in Lapland to experiencing the breathtaking fireworks display in Copenhagen, their vacation was filled with unforgettable moments. Let's dive into the details of their journey and discover why these destinations should be on your travel bucket list.

On December 19th, 2023, their family, consisting of Michael, Shannon, Tessa, and Norah Distler, along with 17 other guests split across four other families, embarked on a two-week escapade. Their first stop was Finland, where they wanted to experience a white Christmas and immerse themselves in the enchanting world of Santa Claus.

Upon arriving in Finland, they were greeted by snow-covered landscapes and a sense of wonder. Their quest to find Santa Claus led us to Lapland, where they embarked on a magical journey in a reindeer sleigh guided by cheerful elves. The highlight of their trip was discovering Santa's cabin and spending Christmas Day in his homeland. The children's joy and excitement were truly heartwarming.

After bidding farewell to Finland, they made their way to Denmark. Copenhagen, with its reputation for hosting a spectacular fireworks display on New Year's Eve, was the perfect destination to ring in the new year. Their hotel's strategic location offered breathtaking views of the city's fireworks extravaganza. The nearby Tivoli Gardens, adorned with dazzling lights and festive decorations, added to the enchantment of the evening.

As they continued their journey, they decided to make an impromptu visit to Estonia, a decision they did not regret. The historic charm of Tallinn, the capital city, captivated us. Exploring the Christmas markets and indulging in local cuisine was a treat for their senses. They were pleasantly surprised by Estonia's rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality.

When it comes to cuisine, their travels offered unique gastronomic experiences. They indulged in plenty of Glögi, a warm traditional Finnish drink, and even tried reindeer meat. Though it felt strange to consume Santa's trusted companions, the flavors were surprisingly delicious.

Their vacation was packed with thrilling activities that embraced the winter season. From snowmobiling to skiing in Levi, they embraced the beauty of the snowy landscapes. Aurora hunting, dog sledding, ice fishing, and ice karting were just a few of the exhilarating experiences they enjoyed. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, snow tubing provided endless laughter and fun-filled moments for these adventurous families.

Despite the cold weather, the locals welcomed us with open arms. The Sámi culture, indigenous to Lapland, left a lasting impression on us. We were fascinated by their enduring traditions and ways of life in the Arctic Circle. The warmth and resilience of the people added a special touch to their journey.

As luck would have it, they were in Denmark when an unexpected event unfolded. The Queen of Denmark abdicated her throne to her son. The atmosphere in the city and the country was electric with the buzz of this historic moment. Their visit to local castles and palaces took on an added significance as they witnessed the changes in the royal hierarchy.

Amidst the fantastic adventures and unexpected surprises, the cherished moments spent together as a family stood out. Escaping the commercial trappings of the holiday season, they created priceless memories in an incredible environment. This trip reminded them of the importance of quality time with their loved ones.

While they were unfortunate with weather conditions and weaker-than-expected Northern Lights, they understood that nature cannot be controlled. Despite this disappointment, the overall experience far outweighed any setbacks, making them eager to return and explore further.

For those planning a trip to these enchanting destinations, adequate planning is crucial. Ensuring you have the right equipment and clothing to withstand the winter weather will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Immerse yourself in the local culture, taste the unique cuisine, and embrace the charms of each destination.

In conclusion, their travel tales in Finland, Estonia, and Denmark were filled with magical moments and unforgettable experiences. From discovering Santa's cabin to witnessing the fireworks spectacle in Copenhagen, this journey will forever hold a special place in their hearts.
