In this edition of Stroll Southbridge, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Dana Steadman, a Southbridge resident and talented watercolor artist whose work beautifully captures the charm and character of manmade structures. With a rich background in architecture, Dana’s journey into art has been as dynamic and layered as the vibrant watercolors he creates today.
Dana’s artistic passion began in his teenage years, and while his career as an architect kept him busy, he found moments to let his creativity flow through project illustrations for clients. However, it was a chance participation in an outdoor art show about 30 years ago that truly ignited his passion for painting. A defining moment in his journey was when one of his pieces—a striking depiction of a bridge in Pittsburgh—was featured on the cover of the Pittsburgh American Institute of Architects magazine. This recognition was a turning point that encouraged Dana to pursue his art more seriously.
Specializing in transparent watercolors on paper, Dana’s artwork is deeply influenced by his architectural roots. He is particularly drawn to buildings and other manmade structures such as boats, bridges, and other architectural marvels. For Dana, these subjects are not just static forms; they are storytellers of human ingenuity, resilience, and history. He is captivated by the lines, textures, and intricate details that define structures, whether it's the graceful arch of a bridge, the weathered facade of an old building, or the sleek lines of a tugboat moving through the harbor. He finds beauty in the worn and weathered, often seeking out structures that have stood the test of time, each one a testament to the craft and creativity of those who built them. This fascination with architectural forms extends beyond mere representation; it’s about capturing the essence of these structures and the stories they silently hold, whether it's the echoes of a bustling port or the quiet dignity of a forgotten building.
Despite not having a formal art education beyond middle school, Dana’s commitment to honing his craft is evident in every brushstroke. Inspired by renowned watercolorists Frank Webb and Ron Thurston, Dana has self-taught through books, workshops, and countless visits to museums. His dedication to preserving the beauty of endangered structures through his paintings serves as a visual tribute to history, ensuring that these architectural gems aren’t forgotten.
Dana hopes his art does more than just catch the eye—he wants it to inspire viewers to see the beauty in the everyday and to appreciate the artistry in the world around them. He aims to capture the essence of buildings that may soon be lost to time, preserving their memory through his work.
Deeply connected to the arts community, Dana serves as a board member of the Savannah Art Association, the oldest art organization in Georgia. He has also contributed his expertise to the boards of the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society and the North Hills Art Center, showing his commitment to supporting the arts on a broader scale.
As a proud Southbridge resident, Dana’s work can be found showcased at several locations in Savannah, including the City Market Art Center at Bobby Bagley Fine Art Studio, the Airport Art Gallery at Savannah/Hilton Head Airport, and Coffee Deli on Habersham. His paintings will also be featured at the upcoming Gordonston Art Fair and the Isle of Hope Art and Music Festival.
