Our Library. Our Community. Our Moment
Architect’s rendering of the new Skaneateles Library building
There is a word that defines everything we do at the Skaneateles Library. It is not programs, or resources, or services, though we are proud of all of those. The word is “community.”
Every single day, our library impacts lives in the smallest, most personal ways. We see it in the child who bounces in each week, eager for their next stack of books. We see it in the families who come for story time and leave with new friends. We see it in the older adult who just needs a quiet place to sit, a familiar face, and a gentle hello.
Libraries are essential community infrastructure, places people come for education, access, connection, and civic life. The Skaneateles Library has been that place for Skaneatelans since the 1800s—and now we’re on the verge of making sure it remains that place for generations to come.
The work to build a new library has been ongoing for years now, and the investment behind it is remarkable: More than 650 donors have contributed to this project, and together we have raised over $7.2 million. New York State has stepped up through multiple grants. Foundations have invested in our vision. That level of financial support from so many people and organizations—not to mention the time and effort of our volunteers and committee members—makes a powerful statement. It says that this community matters.
The new library building will be transformational, a place where people of all ages can come together, learn, connect, and belong. And we are so close. Now it’s the community’s turn. Now it’s your turn.
On May 19, Skaneateles residents will have the opportunity to close the funding gap and make this library a reality. If the library proposition is approved, we can break ground this summer.
Every vote is an opportunity to shape the future of our library and our community. We encourage every resident to make their voice heard. To learn more and stay informed, visit skanlibrary.org.
This is our community. This is our moment.
