The Skaneateles Library is about to begin a new chapter, one that feels both bittersweet and full of promise. Assistant Director Andrea Snyder will become the library’s Executive Director this month, following the departure of longtime leader Nickie Marquis, who has guided the library with vision and heart since 2012.
Nickie’s 13 years at the helm have been marked by big changes that rippled far beyond the library’s walls. With the support of the board and community, she spearheaded a public funding initiative that brought in new staff and expanded programs, opening the door to new ways for people to connect and learn. She also laid the foundation for the library’s bold next step: a new, modern building designed to welcome everyone.
“I have loved watching the library grow to support this community over the last decade, and I’m so proud of the work we’ve done,” said Marquis “The staff are the best in the county. They are talented, committed, caring—just an awesome group of people. And more than 50 community members have volunteered as trustees during my time here, putting so much of their effort and talent into making this library the best it can be. It’s been a pleasure to serve as director, and I can’t wait to see what Andrea does in this position.”
If you’ve been to a book club, lecture, or concert, or even just popped in for a book over the past few years, you’ve probably met Andrea. Since 2021 she’s been the Assistant Director and Adult Services Librarian, planning programs, recommending books, and always finding new ways to bring people together. With more than 20 years of library experience, she knows the work inside and out, but it’s her love for the community that stands out. Promoting her was an easy, unanimous choice for the board.
For Andrea, the Skaneateles Library is more than a building. She says, “I hope people always see the library as a welcoming hub for our community, a place to meet friends, share ideas, explore, and be inspired. I want everyone to feel at home here, with a seat at the table and a place to belong. I’m thrilled to build upon Nickie’s work and carry this vision forward into the next chapter with a new library building that will serve our community for generations to come.”
Dave Hempson, President of the Library Board, echoes the sentiment: “We are sorry to say goodbye to Nickie and grateful for all that she has done for our community. At the same time, we are thrilled to welcome Andrea as our new Executive Director. We look forward to continuing innovative programming and watching the vision for the new library on Fennell Street come to life.”
As the library turns the page, one thing is clear: its story is far from over. With Andrea at the helm and a new building in sight, Skaneateles can look forward to even more opportunities to learn, connect, and be inspired together.
